Lyons Slams Cats
Wow!
The Saints are two wins clear on top of the ladder, but coach Ross Lyon said he has no intention of following Geelong's lead in the coming weeks.
The Cats omitted seven key players last week against Brisbane in the wake of their sapping loss to the Saints but Lyon, who has an embarrassment of riches in terms of fit and available players, will have none of it.
"What Geelong is doing is irrelevant to us. It is disrespectful to other teams and the competition. You've got to understand if you're off two or three per cent in any game you are going to lose that game.

He was talking about how St Kilda does its stuff.degruch wrote:That's about 3 sentances put together...not in context.
He was quite deliberately distancing himself from Geelong's way.
In it's proper context it was at best it an extremely subtle and probably altogether non-existent dig.
Very un-Ross otherwise.
You have to read it with Ross' voice in your head then it makes sense.
I would assume someone has asked 'will you be resting players now you have secured a top 2 spot, like Geelong have done?'
His answer is in two parts:
1. What Geelong does is irrelevant to what we do.
2. For us to feel we can afford to rest players would be disrespectful to the rest of the competition.

Yes, I know...I heard the words come out of his mouth, that's how I know it's not really what he said and is being applied out of context. I think, as you've stated, you'd be drawing a long bow to say RL was having a dig.Thinline wrote:He was talking about how St Kilda does its stuff.degruch wrote:That's about 3 sentances put together...not in context.

Yes, and it was contextually skewed albeit a clumsily worded response.
Like mentioned before he wanted to talk St Kilda but had to handle another boring comparison with Geelong. Fact was he could provide an on the spot answer that covered both questions without one impacting the other. If he got it the other way around: 'We don't disrespect oppositio' followed by 'I don't care about Geelong' it certainly doesn't seem in any way hostile or sledge-like.
He was trying to be humble - you know, St Kilda has much work to do, there's a lot of good teams, anyone can win on any given day, weare not yet good enough to play around with form...' etc etc...
Anyone who's watched Ross in the media would know that he does get a little tangled in rhetoric sometimes.

I watched the full interview on saintscentral.com.aurodgerfox wrote:Wow!

I don't think he was saying Geelong was being disrespectful to Brisbane. (Although given they lost to Brisbane, you could read it that way).
I think he meant it more from a Saints perspective. The fact that he'd just used the word Geelong in the previous sentence, implied it was directed at Geelong.
If the Saints don't treat the opposition with respect (via effort, skills OR AT THE SELECTION TABLE) we will get found out in a game.

This is sports media, mate. Fact and truth is pretty much secondary to a pithy, skewed headline...Batnoe wrote:
Well done Ross, he's right- to rest players assuming you can still win is disrespectful and Bummer is a nob

FWIW I reckon Cats display was horrendously disrespectful and they lost as a result. So stuff em.

especially given that the OP knows the coach is Ross LYON and not LYONS.matrixcutter wrote:yes, linkage would be handy
A simple spelling mistake?
I heard the intervieww that was played on SEN yeaterday and on the tv news last night and his comments re 'disrespecting other Clubs' were defnitely directed at St Kilda - not at Geelong.
If this is on fact a legitimate news column, then it is,IMO, simply another case of 'the media' trying to create a story rather than just reporting on one.

I don't think Geelong really care that they lost the game. They have much bigger fish to fry and probably don't give a flying F what anyone else thinks of them. They've been there and done it and know what it takes. As has Leigh Matthews, who said if he were coaching Geelong he'd rest the other half of their team this week. James Hird also agreed and he was part of Essendon's 21 straight wins in 2000. How much experience do we have in this regard?

...and how much experience does Bomber, Leigh Matthews and James Hird have coaching perfect seasons? Better ask Collingwood's 1929 coach!AnythingsPossibleSaints wrote:As has Leigh Matthews, who said if he were coaching Geelong he'd rest the other half of their team this week. what is said and what is meant are not necessarily different, just more diplomatic!
"What Geelong is doing is irrelevant to us (we've already played that bunch of sooky la-las - we won).
It (the geelong fc) is disrespectful to other teams and the competition.
You've got to understand if you're off two or three per cent in any game you are going to lose that game (as we've all just seen with that bunch of sooky la-las).
(next question please, and can we not talk about how the cats had an 'mcg win' over us)"

So what if he was bagging Geelong, if he was it was a pretty minor dig and Bomber has criticised us before. Haven't people heard him talk about the way he doesn't recycle other club's tried players and how odd he thinks it is that we have so many? A moron and take a look Bomber, where exactly did Mooney come from? Regardless, I don't personally think it was anything against the Cats, it was Ross simply wanting to talk about the Saints like he should be.
