Excellent and very balanced assessment Ace - some months ago I ddi a post on Luke Ball, questioning his status as an elite Saint because as much as he is an extremely courageous "under the pack" midfielder, his lack of pace and inability to penetrate with his kicking meant that he could not be regarded to be in the current Saints best 22 lineup.
I was soundly bagged for my heresy by many Saintsational posters, and no doubt will be again for these comments.
Evidence of this view is that McQualter has developed into a better player than Ball, and even Eddy and Geary are now rated ahead of him in the list of St Kilda midlfielders.
It would not surprise me that Luke ball is carrying a chronic injury - not sufficient to prevent him playing, but of a nature, probably OP related, that prevents him from stretching fully to sprint and kick long distances.
If it is not injury related, then the problem is in his head, because unlike his fellow-draftees Hodge and Judd, Luke Ball has gone backward in his development to the elite level.
Either way, the ball is in Luke's court (pardon the pun) and it will be interesting to see if he can come back. If he does, and he forces his way back into this star-studded team, then that will be great for the club and for his supporters. If he doesn't, then it may well be the case that he will be moved on to a new club in 2010.

Salary sacrifice? Yep, a fair bit would (should) be going into their super funds which reduces their taxable income and is taxed at 15 cents in the dollar in the fund. But no doubt they will also be investing so as to derive an income between the time they retire from football and when they turn 60 and can access their super (currently for them). Of course, training for a profession after football (like Luke Ball has done) is the most sensible thing a player could do.

As of the 08/09 Financial Year, maximum super contributions for under 50 year olds was $50,000. This has now halved for 09/10, so most of it is still taxed at a higher bracket.
