How are we rating our youngsters?

Post: # 871397Post borderbarry »

By that I mean in what order are they likely to get a crack at the Seniors? I gather that Winmar may already have edged his way in front of some that were already on our list.

Hard to rate anyone after one week of training.

After Intra-Club game = Wild Guess :? :? :?

After Rd's 1-2 of nab cup = Dangerously small ammount of knowledge

After nab cup/challenge = Back to Wild Guessing :? :?

Lead Up to Rd 1 = Massive arguements who should be in the 22

But we all know more than Ross Lyon    !!

NEW scarf signature (hopefully with correct spelling) will be here as soon as it arrives !!

Don't forget young Tommy Walsh.

Never in the history of the game has an Irish rookie won the NAB rising start, Brownlow and Norm Smith in his debut year... playing with 4 broken legs and a punctured lung!

From what i have seen of them at training last year and what the coaches are saying, but this is still very difficult to do as they may have developed since then. But in my mind:

1- Armitage (Will be in our best 22 next year, take balls spot)
2 - Steven (Been given #3 so thats gotta tell you something)
3 - Geary (Will be wearing #14, should get good game time next year)
4 - Eddy (Thereabout)
5 - Lynch (Could help our forward line as a medium forward)
6 - Miles (Is the backup defender imo)
7 - Walsh (huge raps on him, needs to develop some more skill tho)
8 - Winmar (dont know alot about him, sounds popular)
9 - Hutchings (very good player, seen him play for east perth, will find in difficult to break into the team.)
10 - Stanley (Still Developing, cant wait till the mcevoy, stanley ruck domination by 2012)
* I think mcevoy has already cemented his spot in the team.

I dont think anyone i named after miles will play a game this year.

Other youngsters i dont know much such as smith (alistair), heyne and cahill can anybody tell me much about them??

I hold out big hopes for Heyne who seems to get a bit forgotten when discussing our youth. I remember him being described as having a bit of the Stevie Johnson "x" factor when he was drafted and although he didn't set the world on fire with Sandy last year, did kick 5 goals in one match. Has a nice size about him but needs to keep improving his fitness, intensity etc.

No doubt people who have seem him play with the Zebs more than I have will be able to provide a more detailed assessment.

Why is that with Winmar. Because he was one of the slowest in the time trial. Usually that doesnt help but maybe we are looking at different sorts this year.

I really don't know too much about him, hence why I asked the question.

I think he may have been listed as an emergency in one or two matches last year and from a bit of research I gather that his position is wing/forward....

some other info that I have read is that he has pace, has good goal sense, good vertical leap and good hands

Draft Camp highlights: =7th standing vertical jump 69cm
=7th 20m sprint 2.91sec

what time trial? speed at draft camp? or r u referring to the pre season km time trial? if the latter then who cares? considering hes the only real new player on the list proper and only guy outside the afl system onthe list proper youd expect him to be unfit?

I was referring to the one last week after he had done 5 weeks training with the club.

Plenty of young players come into AFL camps in decent shape. Rob Eddy and Jarryn Geary weren't winning the time trials straight away, but they weren't trailing the pack either. We generally don't draft guys who have endurance problems. Mark Hutchings has elite level endurance.

I'd have expected Winmar to have performed poorly in time trials, mostly because he'd performed poorly last year at draft camp and because there were questions on his engine and his work ethic during the season last year. He was always considered to be a project.

I'd be curious to know how Heyne went at time trials. Supposedly his lack of endurance was what saw him drop so far in the 08 draft. He has the size and speed to be a really dangerous medium forward down the road if he can build up a decent tank.

Both Heyne and Winmar will make or break their careers on the training track. I wouldn't expect to see either one in the seniors in 2010. Armo, yes; Geary, yes; Steven, yes. Anyone else won't see gametime unless senior players are injured.

Winmar performed poorly at the Draft Camp? He was 2nd best in the kicking skills for a start.

Winmar was also top-10 in repeat sprints. And, yes, he had a poor draft camp. Everyone knows he has skills. He needed to show an ability to run and he returned poor results in both the 20m sprint (3.3) and beep test (12th stage). Both those tests are more important for a midfielder than repeat sprints. We obviously think he can improve his fitness to AFL standard, but it will take some time. He was never going to be a short-term pick anyway and we don't need him to perform right away.

Heyne can use his body cleverly and is a handy mark. He definitely has the abillity make something out of nothing. Is anyone old enough to remember Gary Lofts? I see a lot of him in Nick Heyne.

I agree though, for him to make it, it will come down to application on the track.
