Baker - Not done yet!

Post: # 917354Post Otiman »

Bakes as a previous B&F winner, and one of my favourite players over the last 5 years has seen a slow decline since Lyon has taken over. Through injury, suspension, or lack of opportunity he hasn't really shone in '08 and '09.

I'm pleased to see that he has stepped up a notch this year and is really taking the game by the scruff. His disposal has been top notch, and defensive pressure as expected. Previously our #1 tagger, he has passed on the mantle to Jones and taken the mantle of our #1 small defender.

To be quite honest I had this year penciled in as Bakes' last at the club, but it's great to see the bloke get a second wind and show the rest of the team what hard, gutsy football is all about.

I thought he had a great year last year!

Bakes had a superb year in 2009.

It was no coincidence that the teams performance in 2009 coincided with Bakes being fit and playing his role on a week to week basis.

did he? i can't see any reason why he shouldn't go on if he maintains his form and the hunger is still there. how old is he?

no reason he shouldn't go on for mine. but if (heaven forfend) we should win a flag, i can't imagine him persevering.

Hardly played in 08, started the year with a 150 week suspension for something that no one saw and ended the year with a 2 week injury that went for about 40.

Had a fantastic 09 though and has continued it on.

I wrote him off at the start of last year and he is one of my favourite players  .

Sorry Bakes.

Maybe this year?

Was arguably in our best 3 in the GF.

His job on Stevie J was sublime.

I love the man

I recall many saying that he wouldnt return after his injury and that he wasnt in Ross' good books and didnt fit the style of play

So damned glad that he proved otherwise

Has earned his place as one of the great Saints hard nut characters

Not the most skillful, but great at what he does. Mistaknely wrote him off midway last year, but performances like the GF show that Bakes is still a very valuable player in our side.

Have a fellow Collingwood supporter at work giving me heaps saying Bakes is no good so what I have been doing is taking notice of who he plays on how many goals he has had kicked on him & sticking it up him . If my observations are correct i think the answer is zero !

r1- Jetta & Moore

r2- Campbell

r3- Davis & Medhurst

r4- Ballantyne

r5- Gray

r6- Johnson & Akermanis

Too right, but we probably won't hear the end of it until Riewoldt comes back and we can finally "elease Goddard backwards"!!

Ballantyne kicked 1 from a dodgy free kick, but otherwise he has been very good in shutting down these small forwards. Hopefully he can stop Eddie Betts this week, who looks very important to the Blue's forward line.

love bakes
like watching the games on telly and then all of a sudden a human cannonball goes barreling across the screen, mid air for a tackle.

head first no fear

love it

love how he flies the flag, and tries to get into the opp players head with niggles.

go bakes

Baker looks leaner than I ever recall seeing him....either that or his new haircut! :P (no seriously, he looks quicker than ever!)

Maybe it's because his wearing his shorts even higher this year, seeing more of his legs makes him appear thinner as a result?

Either Betts or Yarram - who is also sneaky forward. My tip - Betts.

He just doesn't quit........

Watching Friday night's game with Mrs BF and there was one passage of play where I said;
"Have a look at Bakes' 2nd effort......SH!T! Third effort!.....F#CK!!, FOURTH EFFORT!!!"

The Bloke's a champion.... it'll be a sad day in the BF household when he hangs up the boots.

Bakes has been great this year, he started last year pretty slowly after horror 2008, but his back-end and especially GF were very good.

Been a really good player for St Kilda for a long time, in our Top 10 for much of the decade.
