This time last year...
I was in a frenzied state of excitement and delirium at the thought of playing in our first GF since 1997. This year, I'm feeling much more calm and measured. Last night didn't feel like a Prelim for me - there was a real lack of intensity for the most part in the contest, and the atmosphere in the crowd didn't really get going either. I think the fact that we've been there and done that (all the pre-GF hype, parade, media attention etc.) will assist our players enormously in the lead-up to Saturday.
Collingwood will face all the pressure to perform, and our boys can just quietly work at our structures and our clearance work to make sure we bring home the bacon!

The Saints are coming!
Last year immediately after the game I was so excited. I knew I would be attending the Grand Final to watch the saints.
I had never been to an AFL Grand Final before and I couldnt wait.
Last night when the final siren sounded I was happy we had won but didn't have that feeling of euphoria that i experienced 12 months earlier.
This year after coming so close last year nothing but a Premiership will do

i suspect a little!older saint wrote:I wonder too how much the performance the night before placed on the expectation for next week.
i am more calmer , althugh more nervous about playing colingwood, and how everyone except saints supports think we have no hope in hell of winning!
and if we lose this year, unlike last year were i went to the doclands and cried, i am not going to the çlub the next day.

Exactly.Gabba wrote:The fact that it wasn't close definitely made the feeling less exciting than last year but what really makes it less exciting is the fact that it is 'unfinished business' rather than a completely new experience for me as a supporter. Glad we won and all, but I'm not over the moon or anything like that. I won't be satisfied unless we win!

I'm overcome by an eerie sense of calm.
It's kind of encouraging I think.

"The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break in the game. Every minute, every second. On this team we fight for that inch. On this team we tear ourselves and everyone around us to pieces for that inch. We claw with our fingernails for that inch. Because we know when we add up all those inches that's gonna make the f***in' difference between winning and losing! Between living and dying!'
Think last year I was nervous and this year I am the same, 97 I was overwhelmed, excited, euphoric I just couldnt beleive it, we sang the song and had a few to many drinks to celebrate being in a grandfinal, the last 2 years my focus has been on next week and will we go one further.
Mate who I was at the game with made an excellent point last night though, it shows how far this club has come when we can make to GFs in a row and in general the supporter base at the ground was quite subdued and humble in victory, in 97 we celebrated like it was the clubs biggest ever win and I suppose for a generation of saints supprters at that stage it was, we have played in 5 prelims in 7 years, thats a great result for any club, let alone the perennial losers of the competition.
Now I just feel ready to see the next step taken.
GO SAINTS

Totally agree with this thread. Even after we beat the cats I had this feeling. I'm sure the nerves will get all of us come bounce down on Sat but my gut feeling is that Collingwood's pressure/intensity has been great all year but ours will be better on Sat and get us over the line. Hears hoping!rexy wrote:Think last year I was nervous and this year I am the same, 97 I was overwhelmed, excited, euphoric I just couldnt beleive it, we sang the song and had a few to many drinks to celebrate being in a grandfinal, the last 2 years my focus has been on next week and will we go one further.

I'm glad we are playing the Pies and not the Cats.saint-stu wrote:I had similar feelings. I said to a few people at the game that it didn't feel like a prelim final.
I think Collingwoods performance against *Geelong* has taken some of the excitement away for me. They are in some seriously awesome form and I was hoping we would be playing Geelong.
A bit disengaged about footy this year.
last year with the 19 game streak and the imperative of at least making a GF and almost failing, I was very excited to be in the GF.
This year after Roo went down in R3 and we bumped and stumbled along for most of the year, I didn't feel we had the same momentum.
Was excited to beat Geelong two weeks ago, but expected to win easily last night and once we played footy for 10 minutes we had a quarter and a half to relax.
heat on the inexperienced Magpies all this week. Will they handle the hype, because it seemed the Saints player and the fans are very calm about the coming week.

As fans, we were happy just to make the Grand Final last year, so we all celebrated wildly after the Prelim Final win. However the bitter pill of last year's defeat has changed thing. Now a Grand Final appearance isn't nearly enough, only a premiership will satisfy our hunger. That's why we've taken this week's victory in our stride, without much fan fare, as were looking forward to a far more important victory next weekend.
I dare say the players have the very same mindset.

Still very nervous.
But not over the top hyped like I was lasy year.
More importantly I am hoping that is the case with the players.
We need to nail those shots at goal.
I already see copious signs that Milne, Schneider, Roo and Kosi have learnt from that and this time won't miss those sitters that cost us a Flag.

I am so glad we get another chance so soon. Memories of last year will most definitely be at the forefront of their minds. We have to win and I think they all know what it is going to take.
