We got pick 18 and Pick 19....

One was a compensation pick, after the first round.... Which we didn't GET for nothing? It was an upgrade from pick 24.. 5 selections later
Basically Acres for Hartung

The other one was a FRP... Pick 18 the last selection in that round

Used to there being 16 FRS.. Over the years .... oversight by one pick

A first round pick does sound better than pick 18 doesn't it?
Can mean anything from 1-18

They are the similar distance apart
MaCEvoy born in 1989
Hickey in 1991
Longer 1993

But in AFL terms... Big difference between comparing early years of careers...
20-22... More of a difference... 20yo players still very much in development
Than
22-24 if good enough both ages have generally started to become regulars

Yes exactly TB...

The point wasn't about Abbott, he was the example... His opposition methods... Side of politics is irrelevant

Tony Abbott is clearly not the only politician to use this method.... They all do

A difference of 2 between 16 and 18 and we had 2 extra picks before the second round started. See you can use words to justify anything as you did with your last comments. Amazingly you use ages to justify something and it so happens Hickey fall into the Ben age group. who would have guessed you thought that. me. And if we were talking games you would have another theory to justify that. In games and years in the AFL hickey is much closer to Longer. Even you should be able to admit that but no its age this time and it will be some silly poibnts system the next time. The MO never changes.

Thought it was generally recognised that bigger men like ruckmen took longer to develop than say mids?

22-24 still developing in most cases. At 24 though you should be getting pretty close to where you will be as a ruckman.

At 20 or 22 you still have a heap development and improvement in you.

Also it depends when the individual started in Aussie Rules. Hickey started much later than McEvoy or Longer, so comparisions just on age cant be done.

It would be like saying Holmes shold be developed as a ruckamn because he is 23 and ignoring his experience in the game itself.

While we're still mired in our paleontological dig - my two cent's worth...

Hickey is much more agile and quick on his feet - the only criticism I had for McEvoy (whom I'll continue to rate highly).

This year we've seen Hickey, on a few occasions, run 20 metres or so to chase and pressure - he even managed to run down opponents - this may only show up as a tackle on his stat sheet - but it's impressive when you see a ruckman do that - and must be team lifting.

Hickey is doing very well this year.

All our players are developing, and tracking the right way - it's an exciting time.
I've got no complaints.

Who's played 40 odd?

Gumby played his 26th last week.

Can we do as well in 2014? Can we get some extra early picks again? Wont be as easy this season, as I believe we will finish higher up the ladder. Be great if we can though.

It will be hard as we are also running out of players that would command a high pick.

I guess that's why montagna has been floated, have to give up quality to get quality.

Gilbert could potentially get us a reasonable pick, but his injuries would scare most off.

I agree that Hickey is still very much AFL developing... You're right on Ruckman because it takes longer to get core stability and strength into a long frame... And it is a position that requires strategy and experience, as they can't just chase the footy like other mids .... they must think there way through a game

Hickey certainly has an undersized body, and gets brushed aside at ball ups and throw ins... He is 201/91
Which is surely the lightest Ruckman in the AFL.... Josh Fraser was bigger

Longer, really is still VFL developing... And learning the craft

Btw
I reckon the Gumby name suits Hickey, he certainly runs awkwardly... Kicks awkwardly and looks very clumsy sometimes around the ball... Perhaps it's just because he is so rangey??

I like gumby, good nickname. If it catches on, I think you can take the credit.

Most ruckmen are pretty lanky looking till later in their career.

Hickey is much bigger this year. Mac was fast tracked also because from when Gardi went down he became the number 1 ruck with no one to really back him up. He pretty much was left to play solo. Hickeys 20 something games were often as the second stringer.

Stanley would be the only one to have a little bit of currency who is generally young enough. The other is Steven which you would not trade.

I hope Acres will be the 4th star in the draft because the other 3 seem to be getting all the praise and all shown on the saints website. Seems a bit unfair on him.

Hickey looks exactly the same to me

He is a stick

Mumford, Cox monstered him

Maybe he should keep the weight off and play to his strengths... Mobility

He'll never be a push and shove Ruckman

He's an ectomorph
