Griffiths was more of a HBF and really only got to play centre when Stewart was unavailable but then was usually BOG.
I would go with Ditterich-Payze-Stewart-Smith.
Darryl Giffiths regularly played on wing with Stewart in the middle.
I remember one game the final round Stewart and Griffiths tore Dennis Marshall and Wayne Closter to shreds at Cardinia Park.
The next week in the finals Marshall and Closter shredded Stewart and Griffiths.

All sounds very bizarre. Hard to get a handle on what was going on... half of it sounds culty and torturous... other parts make the players seem a bit soft.

Good to know, but my memory says that Guyatt and Griffiths were the guys who regularly filled the back flank positioms
Daryl was good enough to play anywhere and came to the club as a full forward from Terang.
He goaled with his first kick in the club's colours but was then flattened by that bombers mongrel thug Bluey Shelton.Shattered his collarbone
Russell Holmesby is quoted as saying in his encyclopedia of AFL footballers that Griffith, when he resumed the next year quickly developed into a fine half back flanker who could hold down the centre position when Stewart was out, which is what I posted above.

I rewatched the play in question. I reckon Nicks is correct.
When Crouch missed the play he stood there like a stump, missed a chance to defend... then when he realised if he had given even 10% of a f@ck and tried to defend, the ball wouldn't be moving towards a score, so he tried run his balls off to stop the play...but too late.
But who knows how committed to Adelaide footy Crouch was at this point.
Crouch wasn't responsible for all the midfield snafu that game nor the poor kpp outcomes.
But I do agree if a coach has spent the whole preseason and season hammering home - defend
Then you stand there and do zero defending, he might get a bit pissed off at you and everyone and start firing missles.
I dont see Sloan as a slackard. I think he's worked hard to get the best out of his body and career. If he is having a go, maybe he was tired of watching Crouch not try. You don't need to be a legend in defense but you have to try.
Regardless of what anyone says, great mids do defend.

Seasons tend to meld into each other when you are recalling events of nearly six decades. For the record Jim Guyatt did his knee at Western Oval during 1964, never to play again. Griffiths was just making his way back then.
One certainty though, Daryl Griffiths being named in our Team of the Century was no mistake. An absolute gun!
