Former AFL star Wayne Carey allegedly attacked his girlfriend in the US last year, assaulted police called to their luxury hotel room then tried to headbutt his way out of a police car, police said today.
Miami police have confirmed that, Carey, who was subdued with capsicum spray and arrested for allegedly assaulting police in Melbourne at the weekend, is facing felony charges in Florida over the incident on October 27.
He faces up to five years' jail over the inicident.
Carey's girlfriend Kate Neilson told police the former football great turned commentator had smashed a wine glass on her face, cutting her mouth and neck.
Police called to the five-star Mandarin Oriental Hotel about midnight found Carey asleep in his room.
The official incident report says that, when they woke him, Carey appeared drunk and lashed out, kicking one officer in the mouth and elbowing another in the face.
He was taken to Dade County Jail where he was charged with assaulting a public servant, resisting an officer with violence, and aggravated battery.
He is due to face the Miami-Dade County Court on February 15.
Lieutenant Bill Schwartz told The Age officers responded to a call from a "high-end" apartment in the Mandarin-Oriental Hotel where they found Ms Neilson with lacerations to her mouth and her neck.
"When the officers approached Carey, he became belligerent, and in fact ended up kicking one of the officers in the mouth with his famous foot," Lieutenant Schwartz said.
He said that, when Carey was placed in a police car "he used his head as a battering ram and tried to smash a hole between the front compartment of the police car and the prisoner compartment''.
Lieutenant Schwartz said neither Ms Nielson or the arresting officer were seriously hurt.
"I think the main injury is to the reputation of Carey, although it sounds like he's recently in the habit of spoiling that reputation," he said.
If convicted of third degree felony charges in Florida, penalties include up to five years' jail, five years' probation and a $US5000 ($5643) fine.
Carey, who played 271 AFL games with the Kangaroos and Adelaide Crows, was arrested on the weekend for allegedly assaulting police during a domestic dispute at his home in Port Melbourne.
Victoria Police are considering laying charges over the incident this morning said no charges had been laid
He had to be subdued by capsicum spray before being handcuffed and taken to the St Kilda Road police station.
Police said after he was interviewed a brief of evidence was being prepared.
Carey had called police to say he wanted a woman removed from his apartment.
Today Show have just said that Channel 9 will not renew his contract which expired at the end of last year. Negotiations for this year had been underway.
its strange how sometime people can just self destruct to an outsider he seemd to have it all
: he did the dirty on his missus and got out of it with only a slight tarnish
: he had a plumb job with channel 9
: he seemed to be gaining welcome back to the kangaroos
: he was becoming a respected commentator of the game
: he seemed to have moved on with his life with a new G/F
yet stupid acts have flushed most of that away
