Only issue I have is that if they get thumped too often it becomes a habit and starts to get ingrained.
This is why Hayes, Joey, Dal, Roo etc need to stay around and help the process along.
Except for a handful of games we have been competitive and the heart has been in it, they learn much more from that IMO.
Otherwise you can end up with Melbourne and Richmond scenarios.
i dont think thats really true ... in 2000 we won 2 games and drew one .. with an average losing margin of 39 points (this included 5 losses by 10 goals or more) ... in 2001 we won 4 games with an average losing margin of 34 points (4 games by more than 10 goals) then in 2002 we won 5 and a draw with an average loss of 29 points (5 games by 10 goals including a 122point loss to geelong) and 2003 we won 10 games with an average losing margin of 24 (2x 10 goal losses) ...
that era was the starting block for the likes of Lenny Roo Dal Kosi BJ Ball Joey Milne Fisher .... all of them seemed to be able get through without it being ingrained into them heck throw in a couple of coach sackings aswell and they came out pretty damn well if you ask me ... results matter little its the experiance of playing alongside the big boys thats the key .. all these kids will at some point reach this moment when they realise that "hang on these blokes are not much better then me " thats when we see the improvement come
I note your point but,
Only Lenny and Milne were there in 2000, plus Roo and Kosi in 2001 for example, so those years count for little.
In 2002 we started playing better and that's when the bulk came, only a handful of bad efforts.
The older players hung around to help transition the kids which hurried the re-generation along.

Appears so, but probably in much larger numbers than other clubs that take a fall. Maybe we need more day games to entice family's ?

i am Melbourne Skies - sometimes Blue Skies, Grey Skies, even Partly Cloudy Skies.

we are where we are simply because the club under performed and I'm not talking about the players.

If we end up with Pick 3 in the draft and a % above 80 I will be a happy chappy.
It means we are not that far off the pace and get a young gun midfielder.

There certainly has been some strange tactical decisions (moving Stanley forward against teams with tall forward lines) and team selections (playing too many small forwards and not enough mids) however a few players have also under-performed (Dal Santo, Milne & Saad) or been injured (Fisher, Hayes & Gilbert). Putting that into perspective and the natural decline of players and lack of improvement from others has seen us dramatically fall away. I reckon at best, with everything falling in place, we are a solid 10-12 team, and nothing more.

Pretty much agree Con. I'd like to see some young kids progress and give me something to be excited about for the future as well as the team trying the guts out. As long as they leave everything out on the field.
