no what is patent nonsense - comparing the prestige of pick 1(2) to pick 5(6)
So once again: many draft pundits had Francis ahead of Parish and clearly it makes no difference to EFC with picks 5 & 6 who they call first...
And in case it needs to be repeated - most clubs dont broadcast who they will pick (excluding father-son and academy) and choices are fluid as the draft progresses,
to argue differently is patent nonsense
I can just imagine the conversation :
EFC to Francis - we have pick #5 and we're going to select you.
Now that we have received Pick #6 from St Kilda we're going to 'bump' you down the list to that pick and instead take Parish with the pick we were going to use on you.
AND we're doing this just to keep the 'industry' guessing who we were really going to use our pick (#5) on, because its important that nobody knows who we were really after!.
AND we want to make sure that the 'many draft pundits' are 'proven wrong'.
Yeah, that makes a lot of sense to me.
About as much sense as us choosing Dunstan/Acres and Kosi/Roo in the order we did to 'camouflage' who we were really after.
Dodoro out-smarted and out-played Bains in the Carlisle trade. Bains is a polite temperate private school circle book smart kind of bloke and Dodoro is a dodgy used car salesman from the other sides of the tracks who would sell his grandma for two bob. When it comes to wheeling and dealing in the footy world - the street smart used car salesman is actually the guy you want in your corner.

And what has that to do with the debate about whether Parish would have been available with our pick (#6)?
Dodoro wanted our Pick because they obviously wanted both Parish and Francis.
We wanted Carlisle and, if you believe the Club, Gresham.
They got who they wanted and we 'claim' we got who we wanted.
Now you can assess the merits of the players we selected (whom we claim were our first choices) but what has that to do with the conversation about Parish (who was taken with EFC's first pick - before ours)
IMHO the debate is/should be whether we should have kept our pick and taken Francis rather than Carlisle/Gresham - Francis was still available whilst Parish was already gone.
I'm sorry, I must have misread the OP.
I thought it said that posters keep stating that our pick was used by EFC to take Parish, which is patently wrong (and nonsense).
I haven't seen a thread where someone has posted that it was a mistake to give our pick to EFC because we should have taken Francis
Nor a thread along similar lines regarding Milera
Nor a thread along similar lines about anybody else.
Only about Parish.
BigMart wrote:Yes, it was one pick out... Total nonsense
Let's say Francis then... Who I reckon will be better than Parish
So therefore the OP is correct and I didn't misread it.
Parish was not available at our Pick and therefore all those posters 'lamenting' about not taking him are just posting nonsense.
Of course we could have saved all the drama and heart ache and just gone conventional in the draft.
Callum Ah Chee at pick 5 and Kieran Collins at 22.
Then the same thing next year - use our two top picks in the draft.
For all our 'wheeling and dealing' I dont think we have done any better than just straight down the line drafting.
I think maybe we are trying to be cleverer than we really are. Half the time we out smart ourselves.

But Essendon didn't
They were always getting Parish

Agreed. We've had a bag of first round picks over the last four drafts and we still haven't added any clear A-graders to the list. We have a few "potentials" which you can just about count on one hand, but with each year that Footscray improve, we're standing still.
Enough of the nice men in suits. Bring in some admin who demand success!
