LEIGH MATTHEWS.

I'll be underwhelmed with anyone else...bar Alistair Clarkson...or maybe at a pinch Kevin Sheedy
Closest UNTRIED version of Leigh Matthews is, Michael Voss.
Voss has had one stint as a Head Coach at the Lions already. 2009-2013

Who are the recycled coaches that have won flags in the past 20 years?

Off the top of my head, the only 'recycled' coaches that have had success are Matthews with the Lions, and Malthouse at Collingwood (and the Eagles).
Matthews however, won a flag as an Untried coach.

All the other recycled coaches failed at their next club, however they all actually won their flags as untried coaches.

Simpson
Hardwick
Beveridge
Clarkson
Longmire
Scott
Roos
Worsfold**
Sheedy
Matthews*
Williams
Pagan**
Thompson**
Malthouse***

* Also won a flag as an Untried coach
** Only won their flags as Untried coaches
*** Did not win a flag as an Untried coach

So why does the footy world scream for a 'tried' or experienced coach?
The past 20 years tells us that it's far more likely that an untried coach will win the flag.

It also tells us that recycled coaches that didn't win a flag at their first crack are even less likely than those that did.

For mine, it's either Clarkson or an untried coach.

Given that I attribute Clarkson's success probably more to Luke Hodge than to Clarkson's coaching - I think we need to weed out an untried coach.

If we're playing the percentages, someone like Chris Newman, Ashley Hanson or Sumich fit the bill.

I like your thinking. Sumich is one that I totally forgot about. Would be a good get imo.

What about this bloke? He's untried...but certainly seems like he's doing ok in his current interim role

What about Peter Sumich?
They say he could be a gun coach.
Doesn't come across as smart but apparently is very sharp.
