I think you’ll find very few wingmen lay tackles across the league

Stonecold was a 6’6” strongman who could beat up anyone who dared challenge him... he sure scared the hell out of me..😂😉

That’s what he reckoned anyway!!!

He evened pretended to be Lazar Vidovic for a while...

Yes I remember. He posted it quite a few times and then when I brought it up once, he accused me of outing him online. Then my stalker pointed out how horrible I was for outing Mr. Vidovic from his own posts as if I actually knew who he was. Fun times

Now correct me if I’m wrong BM... my recollection is that you weren’t a big fan of Hickey minus that break out game he had against Port around 2016. Have I got that right?

Not a massive fan of Hickey

Or Longer

Not a fan of Ruckmen with some Ability but no presence or ruckmen with some presence but no ability.

Both Longer and Hickey had serviceable to good games at times, but weren’t ever good consistently.

Hickey - an ok footballer, not a good ruckman
Longer - an ok ruckman, not a good footballer

Marshall and Ryder are both good ruckmen and good footballers

Hickey was consistently good in 2016. He finished top 10 in the TB Medal

https://www.afl.com.au/news/113808/prol ... rker-award

His coach and some of the leadership group didn't value him or his footy and he went backwards

An ok footballer...or an ok ruckman ( Ben McEvoy) can turn into a good contributor in a very good team

A very good coach (Clarkson) can turn that very good team into a winning Grand Final team

Once again the argument comes back to; Is it the player or is it the coaching? We've had these debates many a time

I reckon it's also crucial that the senior players embrace and spend time with young players ( Hickey/ Longer)

I reckon maybe the Saints didn't support some of the younger fellas. Perhaps a legacy from the Lyon years

If you have a coach who doesn't respect and engage with the younger players, what do you reckon the senior players are going to do?

Most of these young blokes who come into AFL are very talented but they need guidance and mentoring.

It helps when you have a captain and a leadership group that is supportive and understands that these bigger blokes take time.

I believe we have a very good coach in Ratten. I also believe that jack Steele will be a very good captain

Richardson developed a mindset against Hickey and favoured Longer who was the worst ruckman I've seen at St Kilda. Hickey was cast aside when he had double the ability if Longer. Remember, this was the coach who had to be convinced by his assistant coaches that Dylan Roberton could play. No wonder we we so awful under him

Not really, he's had games like that for us & even West Coast. What he's lacked is consistency, very much a confidence player, seems to lose that relatively easily.

Was always the better player to Longer. McEvoy was always the better of both. Marshall and Ryder better than all of them. This is why not having either at the start of 2021 is hurting so much.

Do we think Rhys Stanley also looks like a new player. (I don't).
However perhaps instead of trading ruckmen we could just loan them out until we need them soccer style. Like now.
Anyone know what Billy Longer is up to nowadays? Ben Mc, Tom and Rhys often mentioned in the press & even saw Big Carl last week on TV but can't find out about Billy.

McEvoy is better than ordinary

Finished 3rd in a B&F and is a club captain and a multi premiership ruckman.

Hickey did finish 9th in a B&F in his best year
Interesting the whipping boys
Geary (2nd)
Newnes (5th)
Weller (7th)

In that same year, and it was a year we just finished out of the 8

I’ll think you’ll find Longer did pretty well in 2015 & 2017

Hickey, ok around the ground. Poor in the ruck contests
Just not heavy enough

it was an interesting time for ruck stocks at stkilda under richo
He valued Longer
Hickey was easily the better footballer by a long way and my preferred option
and everyone is forgetting the US import Holmes who could leap over the top of both but just couldnt play the game after that ( yeah I know exactly like Longer - but at least Holmes had an excuse)

What angered my most about the Longer VS Hickey debate here was the discussion descended to the level about Hickeys' masculinity and sexual preference
