The difference between Blues 2021 vs. 2022 is coaching. We have the list but - after last week - not the coach teaching fast ball movement attacking footy.

There list has more elite talent and better mids in particular

Clearly ahead of us by approx 6 goals

Not sure they’re the model to follow tho. When did they last play finals? It’s no wonder they have so many top 10 picks

Bluescum have a full list to pick from

When was the last time we ever had that

They are building a decent core but Bulldogs had 3 more scoring shots than them ... were very average .... and only just lost

2 key injuries to the Brownbaggers and they will be bog standard average

When the Dogs stopped the blues dominance and got the game going their way the Blues were able to go up a level again and stop their run...that's what we can't seem to do.

The Dogs have everything they need to win a flag but time will tell if their club has some issues behind the scenes. They are a bit like us and crap their pants easily when there is a bump in the road.

Cripps and straight goal kicking were the difference, I think. Both v.good sides. But wouldn't think we would be intimidated by either.

Carlton will slow considerably as Cripps misses games through injury. He is fearless and gets clobbered. Taped shoulders, orthopedic undies, possible concussion last night, he will get worn down and battered. I don't see who in Blues side can protect him.

(Presume we are talking about Carlton not cartlon)

They’ve had two games in which they played at a finals level of intensity and effort. It’s not coming easy to them: they’re pushing themselves very hard. It’s a long season…

The best way to counter them is to neutralise both Cripps and Saad. While the Dogs were able to do that, they got back in the game. Also, the Dogs missed plenty of chances and yet still finished within range.

They should make the 8. They’re the best they’ve been since the 90s. But Cripps is at least as important to them as Martin is to the Tigers. So much depends on his fitness.

Anyway, full marks to Voss for getting them up and going. I really didn’t know he had in him as a coach

Spine is impressive.

Two genuine key forwards who kicked nine between them and good key defenders in Weitering and McGovern.

Plus two gun midfielders in Cripps and Walsh.

Along with a useful supporting cast. Plus when their legion or moronic supporters get behind them they grow an extra leg.

I’d hoped it wouldn’t come to this, but unfortunately Carlton are up and about
So at R2 we can say Carlton is the first team outside the final 8 from 2021 that will most likely push someone out of the 8 from 2021. I'll predict it is the Bombers as I think their jump into the 8 was Covid assisted -- a bit like ours in 2020.

The Question is then, is there room in the 8 for another team from outside the final 8 of 2021 to push in there this year and if so who will that team most likely be based on R2 form --- AND who do they push out from the final 8 of 2021?
After Sunday, we all might be saying the Dockers are a good chance.

Just on the Dogs. Have watched both their games and they are making unforced ball handling errors they weren’t making last year and it’s costing them. Highlights to me just how crucial being clean with the footy is. A team flowing forward that coughs it up with a missed pass or handball that leads to an oppo F50 entry or goal totally sucks the wind out of the sails.

The Dogs were relentless and they had their chances with about 6 inside 50’s late in that last term and could have come within 1 goal if they kicked straight. They had momentum and if footy goes back to the centre and with the 6-6-6 rule they could have gone on with it.

Instead, the ball went through for a point and the Blues quickly got it up the other end and Curnow iced it.

The Dogs kicked 4-6 from 10 set shots on the night

They kicked 2.7 in the last quarter

No Fyfe and with Mundy and Cox out due to these ridiculous covid protocols our chances just went up a significant notch or two.

Covid synthesised results in 2022 is going to make it hard to assess the real progress or decline again of some clubs.

A crazy season of nothingness looms large as the colder weather moves in, I think we'll see teams fielding 15 to 18 players from the 2nds and 3rds within the month.

Carlton have been "past us" for years but they've never been able to get their full team on the park.

Carlton have a number of guns in their team.
Something that we lack.

We don't have an equivalent to Cripps or Walsh.
Steele is a very solid midfielder, but he's no Cripps. Ironically, he did manage to consistently curtail Cripps' output when played as a tagger.

They have a great double pronged key forward attack. We don't.
They have a number of solid tall options in defence. We don't.
And their midfield has more depth and class than ours.

One thing I noticed was Carlscum were precise with their field kicking on the run.
Something we can't do.
And they were good at handball, picking right target.
We don't do that. We give to a guy who's under pressure and turn it over.

a. coaching?
b. player development?
c. recruiting? (not recruiting players with skill or football nous)

What about a fit Cripps McGovern and Curnow??

Or the inclusion of Hewitt and Cerra.

Blues and St Kilda have both been rebuilding.

Overall our recruiting in recent times has failed to deliver in the most important area which is the midfield. The engine room. Steele is our only truly quality mid, and the only mid we have that other clubs would want. Sadly we seem to have been obsessed with acquiring small forwards and this has been an under-perform.

The rest of our positions are reasonable to good. But our midfield is sad.

The Blues have steadily rebuilt. One might argue that they took a while, but they now have a good and well balance list and best 22. Plus now seemingly a coach that can coach. Their team jig saw is looking more complete than ours.

In the midfield Cerra and Hewitt this year add quality depth to the already acquired Cripps, Walsh, Kennedy, Setterfield and others. The Dogs have great mids, but lack the quality talls that the Blues have assembled.

Now I am not saying that the Blues have made it, but they now have a very well balanced platform to build upon....and a coach in Voss that looks to be able to get the all gelling well.

Meanwhile at St Kilda we still have a midfield that lacks quality.

Here's a theory.
When we get the ball, our guys nearby and upfield, can't or don't get separation from their oppo, so aren't in the best position to receive.
And the delivery, either by foot or hand, can be crap too.
Result- turnover.
There's enough highly-paid coaches on staff to look at hours of video to spot WTF the players are doing wrong, and bloody address it in training, match sim, etc.

If they're addressing it in training but the players keep stuffing up on game day, what's the solution?
Who knows.
