The team aren't fit enough this year and they seem to be having far too many re-occurring injury issues which is the responsibility of the coach and his fitness team. There is no doubt we would be a better team with our more senior players in form and playing but that again rests with the coach! People can blame the holes in the list for as long as they like, but without a decent coaching and fitness team any list would not improve. Again look at the Port Adelaide example !
ok idiot you want to play the kids, and you complain we're not fit enough? You can't have it both ways

if you swaped in any coach right now IT WILL NOT HELP US

No our 19 and 19 y.o. should be as fit and as big as players who have played 50-60 games.

Obviously Watters cant coach them like say Hird and Thompson over at Essendon to put on bulk in one pre season.

Maybe WO want all of our players to be injected with steriods and peptides so they can bulk up.

Dont take the fool seriously, he is completely in an infantile world of his own where the likes of Wright,Newnes, Webster, Murdoch, Stanley, Dunnell, and Saunders Sipposs, should all be as big and fit as mature teams like Richmond.

The guy is an A grade F-Wit. As if you cant tell that from his inaine banal and assanine blatherings on here week after week.

SACK THE COACH
SACK THE COACH
SACK THE COACH

Lance or James??

There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, "Enough is enough." For me, that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in <redacted>. Over the past three years, I have been subjected to a <redacted>investigation followed by <redacted> witch hunt. The toll this has taken on my family, and my work for <redacted>and on me leads me to where I am today – finished with this nonsense. (Oops just got a spontaneous errection <unredacted>)

I think it is fair to question Watters coaching. Have we got the right man is a question that will always be lurking in our heads until he gets us a Premiership. To be honest I find it hard to identify so far what game style he is developing apart from a Collingwood-esque hugging of the boundary line. But a thread with title "Cant afford to keep Watters" is just over the top. Is this going to happen after every loss for the next 2 years?

I heard a stat that Richmond had 70 inside 50's. No defense can cope with that let alone an extremely inexperienced backline. Saints did really well in first quarter. But when it fell apart in the 2nd and we got smashed in the middle, there was no one able to stand up when it began to spin out of control (Rooey can't do it every week). We have 2 good ball winning mids in Stevens and Armo, that's it. Until that changes its going to be very uphill against any sort of good team.

What about the senior players Shanghai - how many of them have run out games like they had in previous years. Honestly with the incessant insults tonight you have lowered yourself to Joffa's levels whom is 'lowest of the low' of all current posters !

Answer this.

"what did Scott inherit"

A big royal mess of a list, that's what.

Everyone can go on until the cows come home that Ross didn't stay because we didn't make him feel wanted, he was SO looking for a reason to go....and if you look at from the perspective of his being a 'career coach' it may well of been his undoing.

Not that it justifies his leaving BTW.

For how long does Ross Lyon get blamed for everything at the club 2 years later?

Is it Lyon's fault Milera had 2 kicks today, that Ross was subbed and Hickey, Saad and Lee all played in the reserves? Must have been Lyon's fault for BJ leaving too.

What about the game plan? Game plan today was Ross Lyon's fault too.

The only thing Ross Lyon has been responsible for is Fremantle. And the will be playing finals, all without their capital and best player for majority of the year.

I think it's pretty fair to suggest that Ross left us in a hole because there is a massive deficiency in our player that should now be in their early to mid 20s with 20 to 70 games under their belt. There are hardly any players left that were drafted during Ross' time and when Dempster and Schnieds go only Steven and Stanley will really be left to show for the same era Geelong were able to pick up at least 8 excellent to solid players and have a very even spread of players in a range of ages.

The flow on effect of his recruiting is significant.

To say otherwise is very strange.

I already acknowledged Freo was the correct decision as far as career is concerned, completely justified, know way was he sticking around.

Thanks for the great few years Ross, I never quite fully appreciated how lucky we were to fly the scarf out the window on the way home from a game more often than not, but the future WAS compromised for the now. Massively so.

Can't blame Ross, he told the board he was going to get in mature recycled players, and they bought in.

2 years however is not long enough to turn it around, it's going to take a long time.

It wasn't RL recruiting at the time they had Brian Peake & Beveridge in charge of recruiting and we have seen what they delivered over that time ...

The flow on effect of his recruiting is significant.

But the points that I raised all are under the current regime... Maybe we should address them?

Saad, Milera, Lee, Hickey all mature picks trading away first round draft picks.

BJ leaving.

I can't believe some of the arguments being thrown around about Watters. We are a bottom four side in dire need of talent and the coach is doing exactly what he should doing. He needs to get games into the kids, which is a tick. Secondly, he will need some top picks at this year's draft and next year. It doesn't help that Lovett, Lynch and Winmar didn't progress with the club, but that is footy.

Saad/Milera was Chris, Hickey/Lee was Chris....wasn't it?

Current regime, but up for debate if it belongs on the 'Saints can't afford to keep Watters' thread.

We may regret the day we gave full control to the coach, we may well regret the day we didn't give much control to the coach

Some good points Spinner.
The problem goes deeper as we needed to appoint a better coach to build on the success we had a few years ago.
SW will end up like Neeld,.
ANyone can see we've gone backwards in a big way over the last 2 years.
Player come and go as do coaches,so it's up to the club to appoint the correct personnel to over come this.
The players just want the season to end , that's obvious.
We're in a pretty big hole ATM ...
Geelong is the model we should follow as far as development goes in all areas.IMO.
Very sad to see this at he club again.Just laughable.

Port are a good club for us to compare ourselves with....

Between 1999-2007 Port Adelaide played finals for 7/9 years including 1 flag, 2 pre-season cup wins, and a losing GF appearance
Between 2004-2011 St Kilda played finals in 7/8 years including 2 pre-season cup wins and 2 losing GF appearances.

Port finished 2nd in 2007, 13th bottom in 2008, 10th in 2009, 10th in 2010, 16th in 2011 and 14th in 2012.
Players <23yo who are top ten draft picks = 5 (Hartlett, Butcher, Moore, Wingard, Wines)

Saints finished 2nd in 2009, 2nd in 2010, 7th in 2011, 9th in 2012
Under 23yos who are top ten draft picks = ZERO.
(Highest dp <23yo still on the list = Nathan Wright (#24))

We are around 4-5 years behind them.

Sure Hinkley's a good coach getting the best out of young players... but the difference in the talent of the young players at his disposal compared to ours is stark.

Irrespective of coach we should expect anywhere between 2-4 years of low finishes before we can exoect to potentially climb the ladder again... and quite possible longer... it's how the system works.

I would like to point out that we have one No.1 and one No.2 pick, both now 30, and two No.9 picks, Armo and Ben, both of whom should be nearly at their peak. SWe are suffering because we have been such a strong club of recent years.

For us to break the cycle will require a lot of luck in our future trading and the drafts.

An interesting point made by Noob that nobody picked up on. Would we have been better off with Harvs.???

Saad and Milera picked up for a loss of 5 picks in the draft i.e. #20 downgraded to #25 - so far that looks like an excellent call - players we could have got instead = Crozier, Bootsma, Newman, Schade. ALSO we got a free swing at Milera and Saad. Both of whom have shown something, though admittedly neither looking like longer term AFL players right now.

2012 trade/draft summary

#12 given up for Lee (prob LOSS so far but early days), #24 (Nathan Wright = BIG WIN so far), #43 (Josh Saunders = WIN so far)
BJ given up for #13, $$ space (=short term LOSS, longer term WIN) which was then swapped with #37 and #57 for Hickey (=LOSS so far), #26 (Spencer White = too early to tell), #47 (TDL=too early to tell)
