Here's a theory for you (purely out of my head)
A lot here weren't happy with KJ and JOR and 3 for pick 1. How about this then..,gws trade KJ to Carlton for their first pick (12?) and JOR to hawthorn for their first (19?) and we trade 1 with gws for 3,12,19 leaving us with 3,12,19,21 etc

Thoughts?

I would not be unusual for Pelchen to do a deal like this

I like the thinking! A lot of moving parts there which suggests it would be hard to get over the line. And keep in mind that those picks probably end up being more like 4+13+20+23 after compensation comes in. But it's definitely one way to pick up a good number of early picks!

I believe the dream scenario for us would be to have either JOR or KJ walk into the PSD with the one whom doesn't bundled up with frost for our second round pick. Hence filling two tall holes and a midfield hole as well. The next thing to do would be to trade someone which I believe the pelican will do eg joey,Gilbert I'm not really sure for a pick in the early 20s. Woul also have a look at young jarryd lyons for the right price, although I'm not sure what that is.That leaves us with picks 1, say 25, 38, 56, 74 Take petracca with 1, cockatoo with 25, and take bampton, Webb, Daniel with the last remaining picks before our rookie upgrades. That gives us a mix of talls and Smalls, inside and outside, grunt and speed.
Thoughts?

From AFL website today

Kristian Jaksch
Whispers: Deciding between Carlton and St Kilda but the Western Bulldogs have been interested at times throughout the season. St Kilda is the frontrunner.
AFL.com.au says: GWS thinks the versatile tall is talented but accept he is returning to Victoria. After being No.12 pick two years he should command an early second-round pick at bare minimum.

Jono O'Rourke
Whispers: North Melbourne, St Kilda and Hawthorn are all circling the former No.2 draft pick, who has requested a trade home to Victoria. Out of contract after two seasons with Greater Western Sydney, he shapes as a key cog in the exchange period.
AFL.com.au says: St Kilda is in a strong position to secure the midfielder, who could form part of a trade between the Giants and Saints involving pick No.1 and other selections.

Draft pick No.1
Whispers: The Saints' prized pick is on the table as the club looks to multiply its picks inside the top 21. A deal is yet to emerge, but Melbourne or GWS could look to trade up in the first round, throwing in a second strong pick or young player to get the deal over the line.
AFL.com.au says: One of Kristian Jaksch or Jono O'Rourke, who are speaking with the Saints, could be bundled with the Giants' pick No.3 in exchange for the first selection.

Surely they have got that completely wrong? Please. By the way does anyone understand the excitement of getting picks inside the top 21. I get why its that number but I also don't get it.

I think it's just because 21 is our current second pick & the start of the second round.

I remember Pelchen's original comment was he wanted one more pick between our first & second, now they're saying three in the top 20.

I get that but really pick 20 or 22 doesn't matter. You don't get better players because they are first round players. And from about pick 8 its a bit of guess work.

I can't work out what possible deal we could do with Melbourne for pick 1 that would be of value to us ?
They want to trade up but from I see they have nothing worthwhile to offer.
Pick 2,22 + 39 for our 1 is not near.
No word of any player they have on the move other than Frawley and Clark.

I'm thinking exactly the same thing Matrix.
To win a flag we are going to need a number of elite players. We will lose most we have to retirement before then.
We need some 250+ champions.

Petracca could be one part of that puzzle. Him and a shrewd trade for another inside top 20 and we will have done well.

If there was something different this year compared to most it's that the top 3 or 4 are standout then there is a huge logjam of similarly good players that could go anywhere. Guys like Goddard and Lamb who people had talked about as top 10s could go in the 20s. Ahern, Marchbank, Lever, Durdin, Duggan, Weller, Menadue, De Goey, Blakely, Ellis, Neal- Bullen, Pickett, Garlett, Cunico, Langford,Capiron, maynard, Cockatoo, Mc Kenzie, Viojo -Rainbow, Nelson all could be good and that's with out the Academies and FS put in.

I think there will be a few bargains this year as teams won't know where to pick some of them. A pick in the late teens could get a very good kid.

I'm really impressed to hear what a quality person Petracca is. Mark Neeld's description describes a quality role model of the future.
Something to build a club around like a Lenny Hayes.

Totally agree unless our club rate the first 4 players exactly the same and then you would want the other picks. I doubt that would be the case though.

We can all point to the gems picked in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds of the draft but if you go back and have a look at who was drafted around them you realise how many mid and late picks flop. I am sure we have worked out from the historical draft record what the statistical probability is of finding a 100+ game player at each point in the draft and the probability is significantly higher for picks under 20. From where we were a couple of years ago we basically needed to replace almost the entire team over a 4 or 5 year period. If we just took our picks where they fell and held on to all our senior players till they retired we were going to be at the bottom a very long time. We are only early to mid way through the strategy, really can't afford to be filling the list with speculative mid to late draft picks then spending the next 3 years working out if they are going to be good enough to play AFL. Focus needs to be on the top end of the draft.

What about this..
O'Rouke to Hawthorn for their pick 19 to GWS
Jacksch + 19 to Carlton for their pick 6
GWS pick 3 + 6 for our pick 1

We'd miss on Petracca but could get McCartin/Wright and Brayshaw.

I really want Petracca but there has to be a price somewhere that we'd trade 1.
Think we're just fishing to see if that deal is there.
It'll take a deal as good as 3+6 for us to deal 1 I feel.

That becomes 4 and 7. Not sure Carlton would do that either.

You're right, this is the dream scenario. I was thinking about it last night and concluded it's actually a real possibility.

We need to use the PSD as a threat. Increasingly, it hardly gets used these days, certainly beyond the first few few picks. But that's not to say it doesn't have value. Both O'Rourke and Jacksch are out of contract. We need one of them - preferably O'Rourke - to commit to us via the PSD.

That should allow us to snare Jacksch with our second pick in the draft.

And leave our Pick 1 intact. Now that would be a seriously stunning result.
