succesful rookies..
Milney rated 2nd 'best'/ 'most succesful' rookie - within a top 20

they forget to mention his All Australians..

TOP 20 ROOKIE DRAFT PICKS
1. Dean Cox (WC, pick 28 2000)

Likely to end his career after 2013 just short of 300 games. Six-time All-Australian, premiership player (2006) and Eagles best-and-fairest winner (2008) who has revolutionised his ruck position.

2. Stephen Milne (StK, pick 23 2000)

Star turn in Essendon's 1999 reserves premiership prompted St Kilda to place him on its rookie list. Retired after 274 games and 574 goals, fourth on the club's all-time list.

3. Brett Kirk (Sydney, pick 40 1999)

Rarely beaten in 241 games after fighting his way to an AFL career, at one stage being cut from Sydney's supplementary list. Spiritual leader and premiership player. All-Australian in 2004.

I'm hoping for...

First pick - Eli Templeton or James Battersby.

Second pick - Maverick Weller.

I think we'll get a choice of Battersby or Templeton with our first pick. Both are good choices. I'll take Battersby, purely because he's played so much senior footy (http://www.news.com.au/national/sturts- ... m-breached).

And I don't think anyone else will touch Weller now that he's so publicly committed to us. He offers tremendous upside from the rookie list, where he gets zero guarantees.

Conlon could be anything - well worth a speculative punt (http://www.news.com.au/national/skys-th ... m-breached).

We only have 2 picks the way I see it as we kept Shenton and Minchington. They obviously are taking Weller so we have one more after that.

I would love another key back eg Tippett (in case Delaney goes down, we want to keep structure)

Then another mid, I like the sound of Merryk Buchanan, was a top 20 pick before pursuing cricket and played 6 games as overager before injury. Could be a big win

No... chance....

Templeton and Battersby will gone in the PSD - I'd like to be wrong but I really can't see this.

heard/ read late this afternoon that there is actually only 1 pick int eh PSD-- everyone has passed- to pick up more rookies..... must have read the Swans and Pies system of going in with 38 players and picking up extra rookies---

Thought there were 5 or 6, in that case - if everyone passes, then I take back what I said, ooops!

I thought I read that the Dogs had considered taking Weller with their last pick in the draft but when Honey church was still there he was too good to pass up. So wouldn't surprise if Dogs reach for him at pick 4.

'One club - the Western Bulldogs - will not participate in the rookie draft, sticking with Mark Austin, Jack Redpath, Lin Jong and Alex Greenwood after promoting Brett Goodes to the senior list.'

Taken from Quayles article, so its a huge risk expecting him to be around for our second pick, but it won't be Dogs taking him.

I reckon Jolly was a legitimate option if we didnt nab Longer.
If the Longer deal did not eventuate for whatever reason - Jolly would have been a decent back-up/insurance.

Once we had Longer though...

What is plan B.

GWS is committed to take Jed Lamb in the pre season draft ahead of the rookie draft.
But because St Kilda has not delisted a player to activate a Pre Season draft pick.
GWS has two chances to take Weller if they choose.
They could use a second pre season draft pick or they could use their no 1 pick in the rookie draft.

Either option may surprise St Kilda.
It has shades of the late 1990s when Timmy Watson trained with St Kilda with the intention of making a comeback for a season or two before taking over as coach.
Everyoe knew St Kilda was plaannig to take Watson BUT
Shock horror, evil Sheedy sprung a surprise and used a pick ahead of St Kilda to redraft him to Essendon.

If GWS grabs Weller who will St Kilda pick instead.

Would be a good outcome.
The real drug cheats would have wasted a rookie pick.
Jolly should hang up his boots and apply for ruck coaching positions that do not clog lists and payments are outside the salary cap.
