Who Said the Banks Don't Control Us Now.
A financial limit has been placed on clubs as they set about returning to play, and the AFL has warned that a breach would result in luxury taxes being applied and it has also said financial safeguards that have been provided under new deals with banks would potentially be jeopardised.
The unassisted clubs now have a significant advantage.

Me. The banks don’t control us.
The AFL has set limits on the clubs it is lending money to so the don’t blow it, as its obviously been shown they’re not the best financial managers.
Why punish clubs who have managed their funds well?
And isn’t the soft cap being reduced across the board?

Reductions on spending are being set by the AFL including the soft cap but it will be the independent clubs who will now have significant advantage and will be able to spend money that won't show up on the AFL and the banks radar.

So glad to see that you've started paying attention SK and that the penny's finally dropped - congratulations for starting a new topic specific to your warped line of argument of St Kilda FC and AFL being controlled by the banks, predictions of insolvency practitioners descending on the club etc etc. It is a welcome change from your previous habit of contaminating totally unrelated topics, raised by others, with your extreme views.Secret Kiel wrote: ↑Wed 13 May 2020 11:13am A financial limit has been placed on clubs as they set about returning to play, and the AFL has warned that a breach would result in luxury taxes being applied and it has also said financial safeguards that have been provided under new deals with banks would potentially be jeopardised.

Fascinated to see that you have now added a further charge that the AFL is acting improperly towards St KIlda FC with your following bold statement elsewhere on this forum:
"That aside I think the issue that will affect us before any possible threat to survival is our abilty to be competitive due to the AFL directing funds and resources away from us to other clubs based on AFL agendas."
Talk about paranoia....should we start looking for Reds under our beds now??

I was at the Kokopo Sports Club on New Britain, the barman had installed a loudspeaker to broadcast the call of the Grand Final by Doug Bigelow and Noel Bailey on Radio Australia on the shortwave band. The barman and I were the only Saints supporters, everyone else was barracking for Collingwood, A Saintsational finish and we scored plenty of free beers afterwards!
Three weeks later the B&W film of the match was brought around TPNG by Rothmans and shown at a packed clubhouse.Them were the days....

Very sad Joffa. Similar to mum when she passed but morphine tends to fragment memories and when she tried piecing them together, unsuccessfully, they made for some cracking stories.Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Wed 13 May 2020 8:39pmGreat long term recall Sanctorum, but can you recall what happened yesterday?Sanctorum wrote: ↑Wed 13 May 2020 6:49pmQuite the opposite old fruit, I still remember vividly that last Saturday in September 1966....Secret Kiel wrote: ↑Wed 13 May 2020 4:30pmI'll assume you have alzheimers.Sanctorum wrote: ↑Wed 13 May 2020 4:06pmSo glad to see that you've started paying attention SK and that the penny's finally dropped - congratulations for starting a new topic specific to your warped line of argument of St Kilda FC and AFL being controlled by the banks, predictions of insolvency practitioners descending on the club etc etc.

I've a feeling Sanctorum is quite sharp, good luck to the one who takes him lightly.
I do feel for SK, in terms of retorts, I think he was a bit stiff to cop a holiday for that one.

Haha Joffa, very sorry though to hear about your mother, that is all too common a story, I have some friends who are in the same boat. I keep myself really fit, jog/walk 50 km every week and played a pretty average 18 holes of golf yesterday - walking - with a couple of youngsters, in their late 60's.Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Wed 13 May 2020 8:39pm

That said, Alzheimer's and it's twin Dementia are a real scourge, I've often said to my family that if I ever get to the stage where I can't wipe my own arse or piddle my pants that they should shoot me rather than ship me out to one of those "Heaven's Waiting Rooms" where they pump anti-psychotic drugs into you and reduce you to a vegetable, as I've seen done to a few mates in recent years.

SK strikes me as a few things but an abuser of elders or anyone for that matter is not something that stands out. I'm quite sure your valid, well worded responses left him with no where to go. I'm hoping his holiday allows him to find his whale so we can then move on to disagreeing about coaches, players and game styles.

I can top that. I was there in 1965. Flew over from Tassie. Terrible day. We were favorites and got beaten by a team that finished 4th. Never been done before either. Ran into the Doc on my way home at the airport . We had a few words to commiserate each other. My memory was that I was more upset than he was.Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Fri 15 May 2020 10:45amNice work Sanctorum, and my very best wishes with your treatment.Sanctorum wrote: ↑Thu 14 May 2020 10:49amHaha Joffa, very sorry though to hear about your mother, that is all too common a story, I have some friends who are in the same boat. I've told the family that the next time we play in a GF I'm not going!

We could really punish each other now and rate them on the painfulness scale. I was too young for 65, but would go 97, 09, 10, then 71 as most worst to least worst. I just never even contemplated us losing in 97 so it really hurt. By 09 & 10 I knew enough to factor in the Saints pessimism factor to ready myself.Mr Magic wrote: ↑Fri 15 May 2020 1:23pmYep,Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Fri 15 May 2020 12:55pmOh no, so you're the jinx.Mr Magic wrote: ↑Fri 15 May 2020 12:38pmJB, I've got you covered - went in 65, 71, 97, 2009, 2010 x 2 - didn't go in 66!Joffa Burns wrote: ↑Fri 15 May 2020 10:45amNice work Sanctorum, and my very best wishes with your treatment.Sanctorum wrote: ↑Thu 14 May 2020 10:49amHaha Joffa, very sorry though to hear about your mother, that is all too common a story, I have some friends who are in the same boat. Great long term recall Sanctorum, but can you recall what happened yesterday?
My mum has Alzheimer’s and can vividly recall the 1940’s but has no recall of dad passing away 4 years ago.
Should never take life for granted, been under immunotherapy for metastasised melanoma on my scalp for past 2 years which has incentivised me to work even harder on physical fitness, besides, I want to be compos mentis for when the Saints win their 2nd flag!

97 - I agree with you - how on earth could The Crows beat us?
09 - I thought we were the best team and just expected to win
71 - we had Hawthorn's measure and our last quarter capitulation was devastating
65 - we hadn't been there since 1913 so who new what to expect?
10 - I never expected us to win that game - the opposition was far and away the best team that year.

Re: Who Said the Banks Don't Control Us Now.
I note Jeff Kennett has proposed the 12 clubs now controlled by the banks should be given 3 years to prove thier value to the competition or risk extinction which seems to have gained support by some sections of the media.
Jeff has called for the 12 bank-controlled clubs to prove they can financially contribute to the competition and said it is unsustainable to continue propping up the 12 assisted clubs.
So very provocative words from Jeff and he is a member of the recently formed COVID-19 committee so is he telegraphing internal sentiments from the owners of the AFL.
I'm a firm believer the economic ripple from COVID-19 won't start to he fully felt until later in 2021 and 2022 which why it's easy to assume where Jeff's 3 year time frame might derive from.
I really hope we don't have to shut this competition down again after the restart. It really will put Gil in a precarious position if we waste millions of dollars to run a Mickey Mouse competition for a Kinder Surprise Asterisk Flag. All it will have proved is to increase our debt and further challenge our survival and/or ability to be competitive.

Re: Who Said the Banks Don't Control Us Now.
It seems to be a convention that government makes this caveat to banks, 'loan money more money than normal due to a crisis, but get written agreements that cuts will be made by the receivers of the loan. along with new accountability measures' . So the American motor industry has been bailed out this way for decades with extra-ordinary loans. I think of it as lip service agreements. Oil for the wheels, but it does carry its risks in the right (wrong) context and the right lawyers.
Jeff Kennet. He is a powerful voice. Prove their worth to the AFL? Gold Coast, maybe? Well, I guess the Gold Coast has no net value because it is de-valueing footy culture. It is watering it down, in a bid to get the 15 million people they expect to live around that area in fifty years. They see the area like LA and Florida rolled into one. But it is like a good car brand making crappy budget models in a bid to expand its market, only for the marketers to dilute the entire brand to such a point that the whole thing is not viable. If Jeff is pointing his guns at Gold Coast..so be it. If he is just pointing to competitiveness or crowds then boo. Making footy stronger is to have two, not one Tasmanian teams. It doesn't matter if 4000 people watch the Launceston one, the value to the brand of footy and the culture is immense as a whole and remember it is TV that pays, not much else. It is like a long running TV drama with characters and character. Tassie has it.
Sanctorum, you were in East New Britain in '66. OK...Were you in mining. I read there are big problems with soil from the Sinivit gold mines now. Guess it was different then. Can't imagine life up there now with air con, but in 1966 ! I picture a bunch of lads drinking tinnies on a porch, smoking cigs while giant ceiling fans whirl away in the rooms behind.

Re: Who Said the Banks Don't Control Us Now.
The only reason Gil and the AFL is desperate to get the footy back is because of the great fear his market share will be lost due to people realising they can live without footy, or live with less footy. It's so important from a marketing 101 perspective that executive managers like Gil are willing to roll the dice and risk millions of dollars on a re start. Call it a marketing budget if you like.
From this it is easy to assume the AFL could be prepared for weak clubs to become collateral damage for a greater AFL pursuit. Very easy.
A blind man on a galloping horse has always been able to see the ultimate business model is for 2 or 3 clubs in every state and Gil is on recent record as saying the COVID-19 crisis could allow a total busines model rebuild from the ground up that has previously been prohibitive.
