Ruckman and kicking.

Post: # 1849845Post CURLY »

A pet hate as a midfielder is ruckman that grab the ball out of the ruck and kick it. Also ones that won't release the ball by hand to runners prefering to kick it themselves. Marshall is starting to fall for this trap and its a detrimental to the team.

He’s a good kick though Curly. It may not always come off, but don’t you like that he backs himself?

He may be a good kick but he should be giving it off to the ball carriers.

Ruckman getting monstered.
I noticed at many throw-ins, Nankervis, when on the wrong side of the boundary umpires throw, using his greater weight and strength moving Marshall sideways out of the contest.
Marshall needs to be more aware and disengage physically, then go for the ball.

Sorry I disagree Marshall is the longest kick in our team and one of the best as well.

I have no problem with him kicking the ball if he has the time and space.

If he is under pressure and there is a handball receiver available in a better position then yes he should dish of in that kind of scenario

Surely his team mates are well aware and have trained this tactic as would those up the field.
A hap hazard kick to the forward line can be more effective than a measured kick some times.
I don't mind it, it he has a midfield option I'm sure he'd use it.

Nothing worse as a mid than having some bloke grab it and kick it blindly time and time again.

Maybe one thing worse is being the forward on the end of it.

Not if you're in front as a forward.

Most good forward prefer a quick kick which is haphazard than a targeted kick when they're outnumbered.

To be fair, unless it's Hill, Hannebury or Billings - I'd much rather Marshall kick it himself than give it off.

I reckon Marshall is a far better kick in play than most of them.

I actually think Marshall should be played as the 'big mid' that drifts forward and kicks goals, as opposed to the traditional ruckman.

He's very good around the ground. His footskills are excellent.

For a ruckman maybe.

I don't mind the ruckman grabbing the ball out of the ruck and booting it forward if it's in a congested area. The team should set up like this is always a possibility and have someone ready to contest.

Like said above, we have plenty of ball carriers who often just do this anyway, so he's just cutting out the middle man.

+1, Marshall did it a number of times last year when the rule was changed, to good effect. He tried it a couple of times on the weekend and it didn't come off. Play on.

This. He's not starting any trap, he's done it from day one which bypassed our lackluster midfield. It's fine, he's not a tap ruckman, our mids plan to rove the opposition ruck, if Marshall wins he boots it. Simple, no complications.

Seb doesn't kick it forward in those situation the kicks usually just end up on the wing where there is no one.
