Time wasting

Post: # 2061401Post Killa »

Much is being made about a Collingwood (of course!) player conceding a free kick by handing the ball to a teammate not directly to the Umpire

I only watched some of that game (not including the incident referred to) but, what I did notice was Sidebottom putting the ball on the ground for the umpire to retrieve so not returning the ball to the Umpire

This happened on multiple occasions that I saw across watching less than a half hour of the coverage

So perhaps the Umpires tired of this disrespect noting that possibly these actions took seconds off the clock also allowing more time before the restart as the ball had to be retrieved by the Umpire

Just another tactic

Because it is Collingwood don’t expect scrutiny

I believe the rule is you must hand direct to umpire or place the ball on the ground, but that's for boundary stoppages.

Correct

The commentators initially thought it was a free paid for time wasting, but the fact that Nicholls had blown time on, meant it wasn't in that category.

Conveniently they found this rule and used it.

The clock automatically stops for a stoppage - doesn't matter if it's a boundary throw in, ball up, goal, or behind.
Got to wonder why we every had a set time to kick the ball in when the clock has stopped.
So, the "time wasting" argument from the AFL is redundant. If anything, it should fall under dissent, but a goal is too harsh a penalty to pay for that minor an indiscretion.
I'd care more, but it was Collingwood on the receiving end.

I had a cheeky little smile when Nicholls gifted Freo the goal

Was lovely watching them whittle away Collingwood's 25 points lead

"Time wasting" isn't necessarily always about the clock (although it might be in the rules). It's about giving your team time to set up your structures.

What narratives?? That the Umpires can influence a game by piss poor decisions?

That the powerful clubs get looked after at the behest of the AFL!

They wait for the ruckmen to nominate and separate...Who cares if the ball takes a split second more to get to the ump?
Stupid rule and it needs to be scrapped.
