Geelong players?
some talk in the back pages of the hun regarding a raid on Geelong...
I reckon some of their talent might be worth looking at.
however they are much the same team as 06, they are just playing much much better football.
taking players out of winning sides often sees that players form drop dramatically because of the synergistic effects of the team are lost.

Geelongs greatest strength is their depth,
Players that would normally be 18-25 on a clubs list are generally made up of 3rd and 4th rounders. Geelong has 6-7 of those players who were father/son selections and quality ones at that.
They'll also finish up with 18 players playing 20 or more games, Harley and Chapman being the only real first graders to miss significant time and maybe Rooke.
Tenace would be worth a look and I'm sure we'll test Steven King though the game seems to have passed him by. Otherwise can't see them letting more than the Playfairs of the world go.

apart from steven king and prismall their percieved death is a figment of everyone's imagination
last season they had major injury issues and their depth was exposed.....
and look what happened....10th.....

Yep..no depth..thats why their standalone VFL side is an unbackable favorite to win the VFL PremiershipSaints Premiers 2006 wrote:what depth????Falchoon wrote:Geelongs greatest strength is their depth,

What sort of self delusion is this. There are up to 10 players in VFL that would walk into other clubs.
They are likely to win every damn comp they are in.

Some of those great Geelong VFL performers do not cut it at AFL level though.
Playfair and Gardiner are 2 that come to mind and there are others, they both had a chance at AFL and were found wanting....
Questionable depth i'd say.........

The list changes for 2025 have begun, always an interesting time for an avid supporter.

Geelong's rise had nothing to do with injuries. They weren't injured in 2006, just woefully inconsistent. In 07, they've had a number of players who have had considerably better seasons than previous years. Of their AA players, Joel Corey, Matt Egan, Darren Milburn and Matthew Scarlett had good 2006 seasons. Ablett, Bartel, Johnson, Ling and Mooney had by far their best seasons ever in 2007. A number of their lesser players had much improved seasons as well.Saints Premiers 2006 wrote:whenever the media looks at geelong's rapid rise the apparent injury crisis the club had over last year is always brought up and how they are predominately injury free now and have been all years
They might be fitter and stronger this year, but they had about the same number of injuries this year that they did in previous years. The main difference is that they came to play every week instead of taking a few weeks off here and there like last year.
who have we got getting a regular gig at Casey in that class?StSteven wrote:Try: King, D Johnson, Tom Hawkins, Tenace, Prismal, Varcoe, Grima also.
Armitage and Watts at best?
Our injuries aren't that good an excuse in relation to depth because the first ones dropped are Rix Thompson Voss Blake etc who still aren't in that class.
I wouldn't mind having a look at Lonergan. Not sure how or if we could negotiate a trade because he is rookie-listed but showed a little bit before his injury and is a far down the rung. Could play either back or forward and would be especially good with all this uncertainty and speculation about Goose.

Would definetly be interested in what Prismall's doing next year. Still only young, midfielder who accumulates possesions, but certainly no plodder a la McGough.
Hasn't had a look in after about round 5.
Flogged the scopions early in the year, had 28 or so touches till half time, when he was taken off and rested cause he was an emergency for the seniors.

Geelong's depth?
When has it been tested this year?
They've had no more than two regular players missing from their team for the whole year. In fact, for most of the time they've had only one player missing. Pretty much the same at North Melbourne. Much easier to look like a super-team in those circumstances.
There's no doubt they have an excellent list, but depth-wise, they're really only about 3 or 4 players better off than we are, and you can basically put that down to father and son freebies, rather than excellent recruiting.
We need to concentrate on recruiting youngsters via the draft. We need a new generation of youngsters to come into the team in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Our last group were drafted in 2001.
