Rate our fringe players...

Post: # 526065Post StNoodles »

With greater depth, there will be more players on the cusp of selection each week than we have seen in previous years.

Guys like Armitage, Geary, Dempster, C Gardiner, Raph, Jones etc.

Rate our fringe players in order of those you think will play most games this year.

I'd say:

Armitage
Geary
Dempster
C Gardiner
Jones
Raph
Eddy
Allen

I see Raph being surpassed by a few of the up-and-comers/draftees this year, unfortunately.

Feel free to add others I may have overlooked...

That looks just as good as any order I could come up with. It's a tough question! A spin off question is - how highly does RL rate Dempster?

I'd add Birss, Fiora and possibly Milne to that list though. Competition for spots is a nice problem to have isn't it....

Here's a horrible scenario for you all. Geary, Armo, X, Dempster etc really come on this year and Harves struggles a bit with injury and misses the latter part of the season. We make the GF but Harves is lacking match fitness and in RL's eyes is just outside our best 22. What does RL do?

Of course this would never happen as Harves will play on at the same level forever!

I think RL would do a Bomber Thompson and put Harvs on the field like he did with King. Harvs would play a blinder anyway. He has been wanting to win a premiership for 21 years and only come close once.

Doubt Harvs will ever play a game like he did on Friday. Was just one of those nights, pre-season and came off a rest. Perhaps there were other factors. Harvs will bounce back and stay back. While quiet against the Tigers, he was deadly accurate and used the ball well.

Yeah the list is hard, but think it is the closest too. Have not heard RL say much about Demster but no doubt would have had a good look at him during his time in Syd. Not sure myself how he will go, but I am sure he is rated highly, just needs to take his game up a notch. Had some blinders for the swans.

Eddy is a rookie....and without an LTI will not be playing this year.

I am a Fizz fan....but his work rate has not be as high as one would llike so far...though it is the NAB...and RL has been giving time to everyone to see where they are at.

other have improved and so Fizz goes from beinga ceratin 22 to amongst the fringe....however the defintion of my fringe includes players that will be in the 22...and particularly in Round 1 when Bakes is suspended and one or two may not yet be fit anough..ie BJ, Goose..

Armitage
Fizz
Geary
Dempster
C Gardiner
Jones
Raph
Blake
L Fisher

Upto 5 of the above can be in the best 22..and for round 1

Allen.....not in my fringe as with Gtrain, kosi and Roo I accnot see him playing in 2008 unless there is injury or they rest a player.

Best 22

Baker Max Gilbert
Gram Goose S Fisher
BJ Hayes Joey
Schneider Roo ?????
Milne Kosi GTrain

King Dal Ball

M Gardiner X Harvey ???????

So 2 spots up for grabs....so competition for them is going to be hot.

Though most teams will normally always have at least one player out injured...plus any suspensions...

Possible Round 1

Geary Max Gilbert
Gram SFisher Blake
Schneider Hayes Joey
Jones Roo C Gardiner
Milne Kosi GTrain

King Dal Ball

M Gardiner X Harvey Armo

Maybe one spot up for grabs with Blake on the HBF...but with it being a Swans match I would expect him in.

Armo may push out Fizz.

Geary to perhaps push out L Fisher

We still have number of games left for players to strut their stuff....but so far comprtition is fierce.

Well not with me....

The team I listed had Armo on the interchange not because I rate Jones higher (and I don't) but because of how I currently see the team lining up.

Armo as part of the midfield rotation.

Jones playing in the forwad line.

If I had to play only one...then it would be Armo.

Right now I do too..

But 3 games a eason does not make.

However if you only consider those 3 NAB games he is best 22..... in part due to fact that there are no other medium forwards that he is competing with.

So he has a "niche" to himself. If he keeps playing at the level he has.....I would be confident that RL would wanst that niche...rather than say a forward line of 3 talls and 3 smalls.

3 talls, a med and 2 smalls 9anda small can includea resting mid)

or 2 talls, med and 3 smalls

Would both see Charlie witha spot.
