Came from the west (Subiaco ?) with a big reputation and didn't let us down.
But he was already a mature player when he arrived - about 24.
Hence we only had the pleasure of watching him for 6 years.
He was a favourite of the fans.
Who could forget his demolition jobs on Essendon in the 73-74 finals at the Park.
And his shootout with Fabulous Phil Carmen down at Moorabbin.
He was also a super cricketer.

Bit before my time, but yeh, he's got super star stats to go with it. Maybe if he came over a few seasons earlier then maybe we could have got that 71 Flag. Oh well. Let's get this years.Enrico_Misso wrote:George Young was a superstar.Saints-06-Premiers wrote:Have a look at George Youngs record....... played 5 years and kicked 280 odd goals. George Young was a great Sainter who played for us for 6 years and kicked 70 goals in his final season 1978, including 10 against Fitzroy that year.
He is a much respected past player and I believe is still an avid contributor to the Saints cause in the West.

Great job Milney - BUT YES GEORGE WAS GREAT BUT WHAT ABOUT BILL!!!!! Also only played for 5 years, must rate as the smallest fullforward ever, played in wooden spoon sides or close to it for years, managed to head goal kicking tally and was My Hero! Have got many stories to tell but my special highlight was coming up from the country after work for Prelim final vs North 97- joining family after game had started & during 1st Q whispering to Mum in awesome tone " think that's Billy Young next to me!' Mum looked' disagreed - waited 'til half time & then finally spoke up - top bloke, little champ. Great St.Kilda Man! Was magic to share the win with him- was my hero from when I was about 8 - now nearly 60 !

BTW. Spider kicked 299 goals for the Saints so Milney needs 7 goals to equal Nicky in 10th place

You are quite correct. Milney has only got to 11th - Spider is 8th with 299. Milney will pass that long streak of juvenile delinquency around the middle of the year.milney044 wrote:The list i checked had spida in there before milney..apparently not?

Have a look at it, he left in 78 or whatever, and we won two games for the next decade.

George Young was indeed a great footballer. He was an absolute great left foot kick.Left at the end of 1978(after 6 seasons) to go back home to WA. This also coincided with the saints dropping down the ladder.
3. Absolute great games he played for us are:
1. 1973 Elimination Final against Essendon. Think he kicked 6 from a half forward flank.
2. 1975 Round 20 kicked 8 against Collingwood but we still lost. Phil Carman in his white boots kicked 11.
3.Against Fitzroy in his last season kicked 10 at Moorabbin.

yep, been saying it for years when the knives come out for milney.
2 goal small forwards are rare as hens teeth.
probably less than 3 or 4 in the league.
i'm thinkin' jeff farmer, nathan brown, phil matera in recent years for return on goals.
farmer probably being the true crumbing forward, and he goes for about 400k p/a.
