Saturday's win was so good, it deserves a song

Post: # 596988Post Zippy »

And since I can't compose music, I'll just have to use someone elses. This is to the tune of American Pie, and chronicles the darkness of the early season, and how much more hopeful I am about our year after Saturday.

A long, long time ago . . .
I can still remember
How big Frasers Colemans made me smile.
And I knew if he had the chance.
Milne'd do his goalkicking dance
And maybe we'd taste glory for a while.

But Lyon's tactics make me shiver
With each low score that we deliver.
Bad times for a saints fan
Our coaching staff have no plan

I can't remember if I cried
When I saw our oh-seven season die
But something touched me deep inside
the day, our mojo, died.

So bye-bye to us finishing high
The only time we don't leak goals
is when there's a bye
And the cheer squad are drinking bourbon and dry
singing, there'll be no flag's 'til I die
There'll be no flags 'til I die

Does Lyon's tactics really suck
And did he cause our lack of pluck?
Saintsational sure told me so
Why'd Lyon trap us in this hole
And does he fail on every poll
And did he teach our midfield how to run real slow?

Well I know the players don't like him
'cos I saw them bludging in the gym
They kicked off their running shoes
And dragged out lots of boo-ooze

I was a lonely optimistic buck
Who hoped the saints no longer sucked
but I knew we were out of luck
the day our mojo died

So bye-bye to us finishing high
The only time we don't leak goals
is when there's a bye
And the cheer squad are drinking bourbon and dry
singing, there'll be no flag's 'til I die
There'll be no flags 'til I die

Now for two years we've been on our own
Since our old coach Thommo was boned
But that's not how it used to be
When the saints look like we'd live the dream
and the players skills and hands were clean
And it looked like Thommo would make history

Oh, and while Westaway looked around
Old Thommo sued on dodgy grounds
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned
And while we all disagreed with barks
The team played badly on the park
And our future was looking dark
The day our mojo died.

So bye-bye to us finishing high
The only time we don't leak goals
is when there's a bye
And the cheer squad are drinking bourbon and dry
singing, there'll be no flag's 'til I die
There'll be no flags 'til I die

Helter Skelter in Cararra's swelter
We gave the Roos no place to shelter
They started well, but they fell fast.
Our feet flew fast across the grass
We hit a chest with every pass
Maybe our mojo has returned at la-ast

Now the full-time air was sweet perfume
And we loved hearing the saints club tune
Down in Melbourne we all danced
And on-field Milney Pranced

While the playeres huddled on the field
'cos for the first time they didn't yield
Did you notice what was revealed
That day, we played, with pride

And we were singing
Let's see, if we can finish high
We may yet create a miracle
right after the bye
And the cheer squad
was on a huge massive high
singing we'll have seen a flag when we die
we'll have seen a flag when we die

Oh, and there we were back in eighth place
Still running in the finals race
Maybe it's time to start again
So our midfield is looking quick
And our forwards can find the big sticks
'cos, delivery's a forward's best friend.

Oh, and we watched Roo on the big stage
North Melbourne filled with useless rage
No matter how they bleed
They can't catch Roo-ey's lead

And as Roo soared up into the night
his high marking was a great sight
The players all laughed with delight
'cos they, refused to die

And Roo was singing
come on, we sure can finish high
We may yet create a miracle
right after the bye
And the cheer squad
is on a huge massive high
singing we'll have seen a flag when we die
we'll have seen a flag when we die

So April and May gave us the blues
but June's created happy news
But that's the way it goes these days
I went down to the sacred ground
Where injuries lurk underground
but the doctors said our players should all play

And in the streets the saints fans cheered
The blues fans quaked with deathly fear
This win was a great token
Our spirits are not broken
And the three men I admire most
Burkey, Loewe and Barker's ghost
All cheered the loudest and the most
The day we played with pride

And they were singing
come on, we sure can finish high
We may yet create a miracle
right after the bye
And the cheer squad
is on a huge massive high
singing we'll have seen a flag when we die
we'll have seen a flag when we die

they were singing
come on, we sure can finish high
We may yet create a miracle
right after the bye
And the cheer squad
is on a huge massive high
singing we'll have seen a flag when we die

Brought a tear to my eye!

Not only did it make perfect sense, but it fit so perfectly to the real lyrics! Sheer brilliance, I take off my hat to you, sir.

And the three men I admire most
Burkey, Loewe and Barker's ghost
All cheered the loudest and the most
The day we played with pride
my favorite line out of a whole lot

I agree with everyone. Zippy that is remarkable, and if 2008 really does turn out to be something special, we will all look back at this song and think this is where it started.

I suspect a lot of the new posters don't remember zippy's genius going back years.

let me say that while flogs like me, teflon, stinger, b4e and co pile up thousands of useless posts passing the time during teh day, zippy flys in and and out delivering gold.

along with the moose, and more recently the jiggster probably one of my fave posters over the decade this thing has been going.

I think Greg thought I wrote it myself, even though I said I found it on Saintsational, but this is what he sent back after I sent it to him.

this is truly a magnum opus -
it's a huge work, from yourself.....
If anything, it looks even longer than the original 9 minute song!
I must advise that we've done this original to death a bit over the years,
and over time it's ceased to amuse the other lads, due to overexposure...
But gee - good on you for putting so much into it.
May you write many more,
best wishes, greg champion

well done zippy!

Faaaaaantastic Zippy.... but then one couldn't expect any less from you could one??.

I only wish this site hadn't gone down so often over the years, because sadly folks so many of Zippy's brilliant efforts during the past 11-12 years have now been lost in cyber space.

For those who have only been frequenting this site for the past 5 or so seasons, you have missed out on some of Zippy's pearlers. He used to post regularly with such artistic skill, humour and pathos.

Just love your work Zippy, so happy to see you reappearing every so often with such gems. Please, please keep your posts coming with regularity again.

I would also love to read all that crazy to & froing, skillful play on words and repartee that used to happen between you and Dan Warna once more.... so think about it fellas eh??

Ah them were the good days of posting on this site
