FERGUSON MUST BE RETAINED!

I very much hope he is retained again, I can see him being an integral part of our forward structure next year, of course that's dependent upon the kid getting a fair dinkum go for a change.

And by a fair dinkum Go I mean, not like, after he takes 8 marks, 4 contested in his first ever game in the forwardline for St.Kilda after having been recruited 5 years ago, when he was an All Austarlian U18 Full Forward, FFiora'sS, and then after ONE HALF GAME where he hardly touches it, he's banished to the backline and then sent back to Casey the following week.

Not even after he kicks 7 goals does he get a look IN, whereas, for example a player such as Fiora FFiora'sS, gets dropped goes back to Casey, makes about as much progress as joffaboy would with Angelina Jolie and then as if seemingly summoned forth by Houdini, Rudi Geller or some tried hard confidence trickster, the very next week, the old rabbit out of the hat, abracadbra, INS. Fiora

Matty FERGUSON AA U18 FF

Give the kid a go!

God knows others have had more than their fare share!

And I do mean a FAIR DINKUM go!

Body isn't up to AFL football. Same may also go for X. It ruined Hamill's career also.

He will have to reinvent the way he goes about things to stay injury free, as Hamill tried, but it was already too late for him.

Agree that he hasn't been given a fair crack, but that's AFL football for you.

We are going to need to delist a few this year, and Ferguson is probably 2nd or 3rd on that list, behind Leigh Fisher.

Barks, how about you start this post at the END of the season when its trading/ delisting time.

I highly think he won't get a recall this year.

So there's no point "Rixing" us just yet!

Here's the skinny.

Current list is full.

-2 Harves and Gehrig will retire.
+3 national draft picks
+2 rookie elevations (Mini, Eddy)

This is bare minimum stuff, we may want to take a 4th pick, trade for a recycled player, elevate another rookie (Attard, Miles) or take a pick in the PSD.

That's 3 delistings from the current list.

By my reckoning, it's Leigh Fisher, Ferguson, and M. Gardiner (or Rix, but not both).

Who would you delist ahead of Ferguson? - Charlie? Allen? Howard? Gwilt?

Ideally you'd love to have a 50man list and unlimited salary cap, but rules are rules, and we must turn over players.

I think that with many players who are on the verge of selection, they need to start putting in consistant big games in the Scorps, and then the selection panel will sit up and take note, if not then it will be hard to stay on the list.

There is also veterans list considerations coming into play. Harvey cannot be replaced on the veterans list because Hayes and Baker are not old enough. That means we may have to carry fewer main list or rookies than 2007-2008.

FWIW, I think in addition to Harvey & Gehrig, we will also delist L Fisher, M Gardiner, M Ferguson & C Gardiner. Rix & Fiora are under contract. Next most likely to be delisted both played on the weekend - Birss and Gwilt.

There's no emotion in list management. It's time to be crude because after this year, the draft will be very weak for existing AFL Clubs. Here's how I see the landscape:

KEEP:

Allen, Jarryd
Armitage, David
Attard, Jayden
Baker, Steven
Ball, Luke
Birss, Shane
Blake, Jason
Clarke, Xavier
Dal Santo, Nick
Dempster, Sean
Eddy, Robert
Fisher, Sam
Gardiner, Charlie
Geary, Jarryn
Gilbert, Sam
Goddard, Brendon
Gram, Jason
Hayes, Lenny
Hudghton, Max
King, Steven
Koschitzke, Justin
McEvoy, Ben
Miles, Luke
Milne, Stephen
Montagna, Leigh
Riewoldt, Nick
Rix, Michael
Schneider, Adam

DELIST / TRADE:

McQualter, Andrew
Clarke, Raphael
Ferguson, Matthew
Fiora, Aaron
Fisher, Leigh
Gardiner, Michael
Gwilt, James
Howard, Brad
Jones, Clinton
Maguire, Matt

RETIRED:

Harvey, Robert
Gehrig, Fraser

Harvey is not on the veterans list (which is the same supplementary list as rookies, of which we have a full compliment + Khan), although he is classed as a Veteran for salary cap concessions.

Regardless it's an interesting list. All of the players there are expendable. Guys like Jones and Gwilt may have some kind of trade value, none of the others would, I don't think. Maybe a club willing to take a gamble on Goose.

Trading players only helps us if we trade for draft picks. Otherwise, we still have the problem of needing to find spaces on our lists for 3 draftees and 2-3 rookie elevations.

But, if what is being said by half the posters on here is correct - ie, that this is the last uncompromised draft for a while - then why would other clubs be prepared to trade reasonable draft picks for our rejects?

Also, Bono, your list of delist/trade/retire includes McQualter, so we are effectively only going to end up with two rookie elevations at best. (Attard and Eddy) So how far down the draft are we going to have to go to replace no fewer than 9 delistings?

None of this makes much sense to me.

P.S. To return to the subject of the OP, I just don't understand what possible point there could be in retaining Ferguson on our list.

Raph, C Gardiner and Gwilt - players who are competing for the same sort of spot - are currently being selected for seniors ahead of him, and I'm not even sure that we are going to keep all three of them next season.

If we were to keep Ferguson, who would we actually be able to delist?

I agree he showed some good signs when we played Melbourne I know we beat them by 79 points but if he did get a chance I reakon he could become a really good forward. He's a good mark maybe just needs to work on his kicking a bit. May I ask is there something wrong with Armitage have I missed that he is injured or something?

Sorry Barks, he's had his opportunities on more than one occasion and IS NOT UP TO A CONSISTANT AFL LEVEL. Injuries haven't helped him.
Sorry, but once again will be delisted.

Love him to stay but he is gone no doubt. We need to lose 6-7 players this year and at the moment we have lost only 2. Unless someone can name 4-5 that will go before him he is gone.

I'm sure someone will, but they shouldn't. His physique belongs to football in the 80s. Players of his style now need to be 6-10 cm taller or 1-2 metres faster.

No-one has ever doubted his work ethic.
