Here's one from the 97 file.

Well done Wakes and Collingwood Players!

Hoping for one better this year for us unlike 1997!

Oh yes I do hope the collingwood fans don't crucify the players for their actions... They do have a team for the future thats for sure....

Yep. Was very classy from Collingwood. Malthouse in particular going up to Harves to give him a handshake speaks volumes about the character of both men.

Was almost in bloody tears when he and Harves embraced. Such an emotional moment. He is such a top bloke. Came to my hotel a few weeks back and was extremely courteous and kind to us as well as being an affectionate bloke with his family that he was visiting there too.

Great gesture by him and the pies.

Shouldn't underestimate the gesture Wakelin made in his last game and after being crushed in a final to call his teammates to do that....

Was always sorry we lost him and his brother.

yep Collingwood have turned the corner.

once they get rid of dudak and the shaws for draft picks from Freo, i believe they will be a threat for serious finals action for hte next few years.

Milkshake got a great deal out of young team this season.

I think we too are starting to see some benifits of our young kids, read the piece on medhurst, he didn't start showing what he was REALLY capable of till he was 25.

probably say the same in a few years time about gwilt, monty, mini and co.

folks get down on players after 2 or 3 seasons, or bury players after 1 bad season.

A good gesture....especially given the emotion of his own retirement.

Well done Shane and the pies.

What were the circumstances behind the Wakelin trades, way back then?

Shane was injured - reports were he would have difficulty getting back to his normal self, Blight delisted him.
Around that time Darryl decided he'd prefer to play at Port Adelaide - part of the Gehrig trade I think, can't totally remember.

Part of the Hamill trade actually. We received pick 4 from the Power for D Wakelin, which was subsequently traded along with Cranage to Carlton for Hamill...

has officially retired- Don't know if he's told the team yet

Prestigiacomo likely winner from Wakelin's retirementFont Size: Decrease Increase Print Page: Print Courtney Walsh | September 15, 2008
COLLINGWOOD defender Shane Wakelin's retirement may save a fellow veteran from the axe but continues an overhaul likely to see several others exit the Magpies.

The 34-year-old, whose last act as an AFL player was to organise the Magpies outfit beaten by St Kilda on Saturday night at the MCG into an avenue honouring the contribution of another former team-mate - Saint Robert Harvey - ended his 15-year career without fanfare.

The former Saint, who finishes with 252 games, joined his twin brother Daryl, a premiership player for Port Adelaide in 2004, former Power star Matthew Primus and ex-Saint Jason Cripps for a celebratory drink in Melbourne's Federation Square following the 34-point semi-final loss still in his playing garb, his guernsey covered by a jacket.

Wakelin, who planned to inform coach Mick Malthouse and his team-mates of the decision yesterday, said: "I'm getting too old."

His decision may prompt Simon Prestigiacomo, 30, who returned after an injury-scarred season for two late games, to play on.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Darryl had already been packed off to Port for Pick 4 (as said, traded to the Cheats for that gun Luke Livingston) & we had Sammy Hamill. As far as I remember Waldron was doing all the trading & landed Hamill & Gehrig in the attraction of having Blight as coach (nice sucker job that one!)

Shane had an op on his achilles & was said to have developed golden staff. There was a query over if he would play again & Blight gave him the flick. Shane was still playing the 3rd tall fwd & pinch hitting in defence, Malthouse turned him into a solid defender.

Well done on a great career Shagger, it never sat too well with me that decent people like Wakes & Clement represented pure evil.

All the best Wakes !!

Hey Edward !!

I think you will find that Shane Wakelin & Andrew Thompson are still very close friends and live fairly close to each other. Being friends with Thommo would mean that he would still be pretty close mates with Harvs, Burkey, Stewie and possibly spud !!

Mick Malthouse started his career with us and was coach of the Dogs when Banger played his first game, which was against them.

Great gesture by the Pies, but pardon my cynicism, has anyone thought they are after brownie points after their misdemeanors this year and also the disgraceful performance by Scarlett last week.

NO but it didn't hurt
Shane's mark of respect agreed to by Players

I remember reading a comment when Mick got to one of his milestones throughout the year that he regarded his 'happiest' times in football as a player at the saints- I just could never find the quote again.
and it was noted somewhere over the weekend that Harves first match was against Mick as coach and if they had lost his last would have been too.
