Caro: Numbers stack up for Saints

Post: # 665132Post Ice Wolf »

Caroline Wilson | October 19, 2008 | The Age wrote:Numbers stack up for Saints

FRASER Gehrig's unusual swansong to his playing career took another turn three days ago when he sat down with Ben Cousins in Perth and put forward the tantalising option of the No. 9 guernsey at St Kilda having become vacant and in need of a new owner.

Of course, it is a number familiar to both men, and Gehrig told Cousins he would look good in it. The recently retired Saint had accompanied coach Ross Lyon and football manager Matthew Drain to St Kilda's first meeting with Cousins, a meeting which went well and has become all the more significant since Collingwood went public with the misgivings which became apparent during grand final week.

Pretty good article by Caro. Seems that the club is doing all the right things on this and has thought it through. Nice to see that G-Trains involved.

Hard to believe she's written a positive article about:

A. St Kilda FC
B. Ben Cousins
C. Fraser Gehrig

Would be the first in living memory.

G maybe our SAINTS link to the new assistants...

Post: # 665190Post WinnersOnly »

G maybe our SAINTS link to the new assistants...I think it would be great move for Ross and the club to appoint G as the new forward coach. Basically it sounds like he was filling in the gaps last year, he is loved and respected by the club and players and will give the SAINTS link to the coaches box (passion) that IMO we need!

Great idea. He started at the Eagels, but he became a great clubman...

And more suprisingly positively about the leadership at the club and how well placed it is, how anti drugs the coach is, and how the Saints have not been contacted by the AFL regarding any player with drug issues, i.e. No Saints player has tested positive to drugs (although Benny boy has blown its policy out of the water  ).

Suprisingly positive from Wilson. Hope this is correct. That piece of news following the information Nixon gave on a club going even further in thier plan to help rehabilitate Cousins than his management had thought of, makes one feel the Saints are heading in the right direction - off field at least.

As for Collingwood............................

if we get benny we will still have a claen record of players testing positive ... even the unamed player belived to have tested possitive b4 hasnt tested positive while at the saints (thats vague enough ?? ) so we will still have a clean record

Couldn't aggree more about Fraser Gehrig being the forwards coach. It's about time we started to keep great clubman at our club. It is one of the things that builds a family like culture with tradition and loyalty.

Greg Hutchinson I don't know anything about but what do people think about James Hird as an assistant. Did I hear that he want's to be involved in footy again.

Of all the ex-players doing media and stuff to be potential coaches I'd pick Nathan Buckley by so far it isn't funny. He's a very astute observer of a game, calls it how he sees it and would command instant respect from the playing group.

I don't know if he's available, but if he is then run, don't walk to sign him up.

James Hird is too committed to his business interests and certainly isnt interested in coaching again. This was straight from the horses mouth when he was interviewed on SEN a couple of weeks ago.

Hutchy was the Scorps coach.
Was offered that job for "as long as he wanted it", but wanted to stay with the Saints.
Held in very high regard! :)

I have been crying this out for ages - just to come down and for 1 session a week would be enough.

Best set shot kick ever - just a pity he didn't have the strength to take more contested marks.

I'm not one to slag her off re looks etc but in all honesty this is the first demonstratively positive article from her about us I can remember. It was well overdue ...

Couldn't give a fig for her looks and to comment on them is not my go. Like you say St.Dac, i look in the mirror before I have a go at someones looks. This reminds me that not everyone can be as lucky as me

The thing about Caro is she deals in behind the scenes gossip and rumour mongering. This irritates me no end in footy season as there is the actual game to talk about. Her political intrigues dont intrest me.

This article is back room intrigues once again, however she has been pretty objective on her whipping boys St.Kilda, Cousins, and even Collingwood. It seems to be fair and even handed and also had things in it that Saints fans can be happy about eg

1) Frasier gehrig is still so much of an integral part of the club he would fly across the country to talk to Ben Cousins along with the coach and fitness adviser. This is great news. We have lost harvs from the club, would be fantastic to have the big G still about.

2) The Saints are conducting its own due dilligence. Have met Cousins several times and plan to meet several times more.

3) The player leadership is so strong and secure that Riewoldt has indicated that he would personally be involved with Cousins and expose himself to the considerable risk. yes a risky proposition but it means the club is strong and the player leadership group is confident it can not only keep Cousins on the straight and narrow, but actively help him in his rehabilitation.
4) The fact that the AFL contacts clubs that may have a drug problem. The Saints have never been contacted by the AFL in this regard. This means our players are focussed and (by the looks of it) completely drug free.

I think all the points above are extremely encouraging and couple with the fact that the Saints have put forward a comprehensive plan to Ricky Nixon and Cousins and are willing to make it part of the submission to the AFL makes me believe that the club is in a very healthy state off field as far as the dreaded culture word goes.

Having just read Caro's article, she rightly points out that the club hasn't had any problems with Michael Gardiner since he joined us.
There hasn't been one bit of bad publicity about him, he's behaved himself and if there has been, the club has dealt with it in-house and it's clear living in Melbourne and away from the Perth fishbowl has worked to his advantage.
So why can't it also work for BC?
It's not often St K FC garnishes praise from Caro, so I think there would be a lot of truth in what she wrote?
