A bloke called Mark rang sport 927 and said Elshaugh was going to be an assistant coach next season.

This guy rings in all the time and is obviously a passionate saints man though don't know how accurate he is ??

I think he just got shifted sideways (downwards??) out of his job - Greg Hutchison is now football manager, which was what Elshaugh did, Drain moves into a newly created director of football position whilst it looks like Elshaugh goes into the asst coaching ranks.

I want to stand for something. I'm a loyal person and I think at the end of my career it will be great to look back and know that I'm a St Kilda person for life.

I thought Andrew Thompson was Director of Football.

The title implies that it would need to be a Board Member !!

Elshaug was Pagan's long time trusted lieutenant.

Mitchell was the coach Pagan had the falling out with.

but what does he do???

he might have a name as the office of such and such but what does he do???

how on earth does one develop youth???

do they have little development charts and tony sits back and goes yep...he is developing well...keep the development up gilbo...geary...your development isn't going so well

point is...is it more football based or outside??? or is it an in-house role that all things are kept between the four provebial walls of the club?

I think its a job that mixes football with outside influences, like financial controls, part time study or work, living arrangements, etc etc.

We have/had a bloke called Matt Phelan (we have a lot of Matts) who is/was our player welfare manager. He is/was in charge of all the off-field stuff.

I think Elshaugh's job is/was to help our younger players develop their football. That would have him working with the Under 21's and also working closely with the scorps/zebras coach !!

Tony Elshaug was Manager of Development ... involved working closely with Greg Hutchinson and Casey and with our young players, and he also had a role in the coaching box on matchday ...

Prior to that he was an assistant coach at North Melbourne with Pagan and also at Carlton with Pagan, where he worked with Lyon for a time.

I think you might be referring to Brian Phelan, not Matt.

The first bit sounds a lot like Danny Sexton's job around the place also. On match day however he takes up runner duties.

I agree with you stinger.

I couldn't believe we drafted him and then he retired

Positions been split
was General Manager of football
Now- general manager of football- List management ( Drain
and Football manager ( Hutchison)

and Elshaugh remains
General manager - Football development

so now we have 4 people doing what GT was TRYING to do -- although he Nominally had Matt Rendell doing part.
BUT the area of management is MUCH bigger now- this was what got Eade and Thompson into trouble and both their role discriptions were chnged.
