Give Benny No. 35?

Post: # 675692Post bigcarl »

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sport/ ... 42,00.html

Asked whether he would have any issue with Cousins wearing his former No. 35 -- a number Cousins used in his first two seasons at the Eagles -- Harvey said: "None at all.

"But he might get a lower number than that. He will get single figures."

The great man may be nice and diplomatic about it, but I certainly would have a major problem with it !!

Number 9, will do BC fine.

ST KILDA legend Robert Harvey says Ben Cousins is the perfect fit for the Saints as the club seeks to end its 43-year premiership drought. He said Cousins, 30, could play for another three to five seasons, enough time to make a real impact.

"Assuming Ben has done all his rehab and he is right to go, I think he will be fantastic for St Kilda," Harvey, an assistant coach at Carlton, said.

"I think he's a really good fit. He would add so much to the midfield, and you could obviously use him on and off the bench. I think he is perfect for what they need."

The Saints remain the only club interested in throwing Cousins a lifeline, after the Brisbane Lions withdrew from the race on Thursday.

The St Kilda board will meet early this week to determine whether to pursue Cousins via the draft.

Harvey, who retired this season after 383 games and 21 seasons with St Kilda, believes Cousins would have no issue in returning to the game, despite playing only seven matches over the past two seasons.

"I reckon Ben is the sort of player and has the sort of body to get through all that (a season out of the game)," he said.

"One of the big issues is that he needs to make sure he looks after his body, especially the way he plays and runs. I wasn't great with the massage and all that sort of stuff in my early years. But I virtually lived there (in the massage room) later in my career. It's just something you have to do to make sure you are right."

He said Cousins appeared to be driven in his comeback after being deregistered for 12 months.

"I think the difference with Ben is that he seems to have the real hunger," Harvey said.

"He had a year off and that will make him hunger to do well. It will drive him that bit harder."

If the Saints pick Cousins, he could have access to his two former West Coast numbers -- nine and 35.

Asked whether he would have any issue with Cousins wearing his former No. 35 -- a number Cousins used in his first two seasons at the Eagles -- Harvey said: "None at all.

"But he might get a lower number than that. He will get single figures."

Cousins's former teammate Fraser Gehrig, who has also encouraged the Saints to claim the 2005 Brownlow medallist, has retired, meaning the No. 9 is also available next season.

Meanwhile, the chairman of the WA Football Commission, Neale Fong, has suggested that WA is better off without Cousins.

"I think it's probably better if he goes," Fong said.

"It's a huge distraction to football.

"The only news about football is Ben Cousins. There is more going on in football. From a selfish point of view it is a distraction and it would be an ongoing distraction (if he stayed in WA) because the media just love it. I am quite tired of it."

Personally I'd like to see Goddard go to 4 and Ray take up 18. Cousins in 9.

Leave 35 for a few years.

5 prelims in 7 years. 40 wins from 49 games.
2009 and 2010 were 2 of the 5 best years ever by the St.Kilda FC.
Thanks for all your efforts Saints.

There is a grace period in which players change numbers.

Goddard is cemeted in 18.

no body gets #35 untill a ideal replacement of harvey's you do not give a druggie , someone that is 30, someone that will treat it with no respect #35

Yeah - solid contribution. Git.

Of course BC doesn't get #35 - he gets #9, its been offered.

#35 will be rested for a while.

DON'T give Ray #17 - give the guy a chance FFS.

No such thing as a "done deal"... and I hope we DONT draft him!

If we do he most certainly should NOT get no 35!!!

guys its just a number !!! the real history and greatness was in the man wearing it not in the number itself ...no one ever will live upto the standard of Bangers and nor should any player be expected to achive what he has any player who wears the # 35 should be encoraged to make it their own and not be held bak by its glorious past ...... but having said that i do think Ben will get the #9 if he is to become a saint

Regardless if you like it or not the #35 will always be connected with Robert Harvey.

Just like Jordans #23 at the Bulls the #35 will always be connected with the great man and anyone who wears it even in other teams and (for me) other sports brings up an image of Harvs.

The exception from where I sit is the #7 at Manchester United worn by superstars in almost every generation. Best, Cantona, Beckham and Ronaldo being the most famous, they are all ultra talented and made the number theirs.

I hope the #35 acn become the same for us but we WILL NOT achive that by putting it on Ben Cousins. Besides I expect him to don the #9 he wore at West Coast since its vacent now.
