WEST Coast coach John Worsfold has defended the performance of key playmaker Daniel Kerr following the Eagles 97-point loss to St Kilda at Docklands on Saturday.

Kerr was locked in a tough duel with St Kilda midfielder Clinton Jones, and although the dynamo claimed 27 touches (including 18 contested possessions), the Saint had 25 disposals, laid 14 tackles and kept the Eagle to eight handballs.

Speaking post-match, Worsfold suggested Kerr was a tireless contributor in an otherwise disappointing day for West Coast.

"[If] your tactic is to play him on the bench, he's not going to impact there or [if] you play him in a different position, he's not going to impact there," Worsfold said.

"He's a good enough player that he's going to deal with what every great midfielder has dealt with since the game began and that is close attention.

"He's good enough to overcome that."

Worsfold was also pleased with the strong contribution from champion ruckman Dean Cox.

"I think 'Coxy' still went pretty well," he said.

"The blokes in the middle or around the stoppages pretty much seemed to get toweled up today."

As for 200-gamer Tyson Stenglein, who had 15 touches, Worsfold said it was a day to forget, regardless of his milestone.

"It doesn't really matter that it was on that game," he said.

"If he had any of those games in the 200 you've played – you'd be disappointed, whether it's your first one of your 100th or your 200th.

"It doesn't matter when they fall, you get disappointed. You don't play footy to celebrate your milestone in games."

Interesting to hear the Foxtel commentators heaping praise on Kerr in the last quarter for his tireless efforts throughout the game.

They seem to forget that they blasted him for his lack of effort on two occasions in the third quarter.

Yep bemused me also, especially due to the absence of many of the usual Kerr damaging forays and deliveries forward, or goals for that matter!

He (RL) reminded me very much of Yabbie Jeans in his post match appraisal of CJ
He didn't hand out too many bouquets for memory either!

Cheap shots

Don't also forget Kerr's cheap shots on the last quarter. Poor showing for a so called champion.

I thought it was fantastic battle.

Good old fashioned one on one all day, neither player gave an inch nor asked for it.

Both players should be congratulated.

Kerr never gave up in the last quarter and neither did CJ, they fought it out to the end.

great stuff

fantastic effort by CJ. Along with Gilbert and Montagna have really helped this group become a real team. Do all the hard stuff but have the class that when they get the ball use it well. Extra Cudos to Joey. He's really stepped up this year. Fantastic foot skills
