Carlton's wooden spoon year at Princes Park

Post: # 738251Post saintfreddy »

Had a client this morning who is a Carlton supporter (yes, I was still nice to him). We got talking about the Saints and Carlton, memories etc and he mentioned one of the most vivid memories that still lives with him

In early 2000 (maybe 2002 or so) Carlton got the wooden spoon and St Kilda played them and won at Princes Park. He remembers the final siren and a Saints supporter running to the middle of the ground and planting a wooden spoon into the dirt.

I'm curious to know, was this one of our own Saintsational members who did this? Or was a story run on it in the press?

I am sure we would all like to know who that wonderful supporter was. Sounded like a fine sentiment to me

Was that the last game played there? Where we thumped em by 100ish? In the yellow peril?

I know a heap of peeps showed up to the game with wooden spoons.

We were playing Fremantle at Carlton. Buggered if I know why.
But the Blues were headed towards a wooden spoon so there was a bit of an unofficial call to arms (possibly by this very website) for Saints fans to bring wooden spoons to the game and leave them at the ground.

One journalist with a St Kilda allegiance was walking from the rooms, across the ground to the press box about an hour after the game and took the opportunity to plant a spoon right in the centre of the ground for Carlton to wake up to in the morning.

That was a great day.

Inside the social club everybody was sticking wooden spoons to the walls but the best touch was the giant cut-out of Aaron Hamill in a Saints jumper.

There was a very lengthy thread at the time with posters disclosing the many & varied places around Optus Oval where the kitchen utensils were located.

It was against Freo, but that didn't stop the message from getting across !!

Explains some of the hatred they have for us that we experience on gamedays !

Of all club supporters they seem to despise us the most.

Some great memories from that Freo game ....

There were spoons planted in the turf.
Spoons hidden in the toilets.
Sketches of spoons on the seats.

Lots of little reminders for the Carlton Scum when they turned up.
:D :D :D :D :D

T'was 2002, Carlton got the spoon, Saints finished second bottom.
Carlton had a priority pick, No 1, and the first pick in the first round, No 2.
Saints had second pick in first round, No 3.
Carlton cheating was finally exposed.
Carlton was excluded from the priority pick and the first two rounds of the draft.
We got Goddard with the new pick No 1, North Melbourne got Daniel Wells with the new pick No 2.
Carlton had told the world they planned to take these players with their first two picks.

I stopped working in Saudi Arabia.
Oh what good year that was. :D
