Given the lack of noise from the crowd generally, I'm not surprised that Nick was able to hear comments from outside the fence. However, there is no guarantee that they came from inside the ground. I could hear the toot of the train at nearby Nerang half way through the first quarter. My mind immediately turned to another interstate venue which had siren problems. I believe the Gold Coast is notorious for problems with sirens, although I have no personal knowledge of that myself.
