Baker struck in a Colac hotel incident

Post: # 761804Post howlinwolf »

Just reported on SEN as a statement by the club.
Bakes has a black belt in karate and should be able to look after himself.

From Saints website
Seems like a total non issue.
So why bother stirring up media interest?

Business as usual for Steven Baker
St Kilda Football Club can confirm that there was a minor incident at a Colac Hotel on the weekend involving Steven Baker when he was home visiting family during the AFL split-round.

Steven was out enjoying an evening with family and friends in his home town when he was approached and struck by another hotel patron. Steven is uninjured and back training with the Club today in preparation for the Round 13 game against Richmond this coming Sunday.

It was an unfortunate event for Steven and his friends however police were not involved at any stage and as we believe these versions of events to be true and correct, the matter is closed.for saints.com.au

I agree (about it being a non-issue)

But look what happened when we said nothing about the recent Gram issue. We were smashed in the media for saying nothing! I think SEN were good to applaud the Saints for being up front about it.

Oh... and I have heard that the boogey man checks under his bed for Steven Baker before he goes to sleep

Any betting that Bakes was sent off under the Blood Rule?

Not wanting to speculate but I'm trying to imagine the scene the club are setting.

Steven Baker was sitting around and someone approached him and hit him.

What happened next is the interesting point. I'm tipping Bakes didn't just say

"Ouch. That hurt. Barman, please escort this man off the premises."

Fair to assume he might have fought back a bit?

Nah, Bakes just clicked his fingers and the rest of the Pub sorted the guy out for him, so that he couldn't possibly be charged by the AFL.

The Club released the statement so it wouldn't gain legs and take off with rumour.

Baker was just sitting there, the bloke came up behind him and whacked him.

Bakes has been given a life suspension from the AFL Tribunal, even though theres no footage of the incident.

Is that true that Bakes is a black belt in Karate?...Does anyone know

what style of Martial arts he trained in?

...have an interest in that area.

There's something about this story that just doesn't add up...
Steven was out enjoying an evening with family and friends in his home town when he was approached and struck by another hotel patron.

Steven is uninjured and back training with the Club today.

The man who allegedly struck Steven will have his funeral service on Wednesday.

Good On You MUM

St Kilda star Steven Bakers mother proud he turned the other
Mark Buttler June 23, 2009 12:00am

.ST KILDA star Steven Baker's mum says she is proud he turned the other cheek after being attacked as he left a pub in his home town.

Baker was relaxing with family and friends at Colac's Austral Hotel on Saturday before he was struck without apparent reason by another patron.

Gail Baker said her son, one of the AFL's most fiery players, might have lashed out in the past. But she was thrilled he let the incident pass.

"I'm super proud Steve didn't retaliate," she said. "I'm sure a few years ago he would have.

"If he'd reacted, it could have been an all-in. We just laughed about it and I said it might pay to stay at home."

Mrs Baker said the incident showed how difficult it was for AFL players to enjoy a quiet night out.

"How much more have they got to take? It's sad they can't just go out and enjoy a good time," she said.

Austral Hotel manager Anton McCarthy said patrons were leaving when there was a minor incident in which Baker, who was with his brother and sister-in-law, was struck.

"Everyone just walked away," he said. "Steve handled himself very well."

St Kilda said Baker was not hurt in the incident, which happened as players took the weekend off for the split round.

"It was an unfortunate event for Steven and his friends, however . . . the matter is closed," the Saints said.

I remember playing against a Colac team when I was in school...the kid I played against didn't wear any footy boots on the field.

Needless to say he was fast, because I was trying to jump on his feet the entire game.

Article on pg 4 of today's Geelong Ablettiser (Sorry, don't know how to post it here, or if there is a link to it on line?).

In the article Colac footballer Brad McGee denies hitting Baker at all and instead accuses Bakes of assaulting him at the bar, supposedly because he (McGee) was served a drink before Baker. He says he (Bakes) was "right in my face and rubbing my hair" and "There was no hitting".
According to McGee Bakes had wanted to meet him outside the pub at 4am for a fight but he ignored the invitation. They crossed paths again later and "There was just a lot of pushing in the chest and talk but we just both went our separate ways"

Sounds like a different version of events to anything else I've heard and read on the subject. I'm sure some people will be happy to accept this version of events, particularly Cats fans, which I suspect is the reason it found its way onto p4 of the addy two weeks before our clash with the Cats, when normally other teams are lucky to even rate a paragraph at the back of the sports section even on game day.

For what its worth, I'm happy to accept Stevie's side of the story, and I hope this isn't blown out of peportion in an effort to put him off his game.

Sounds like the normal procedure for two people going to work in Geelong...a drink, a bit of biff and off to the office.
