RIVALRY Round ?

Post: # 781432Post Enrico_Misso »

Remind me again.

Just what is our long standing intense rivalry with Footscray ?
And why is it deeper than for all the other clubs?

It all started with Alby Smedts.

I think this somes up ours and the Dogs lack of success over the years. Neither club has a real rival and unless you dont play they had to put us against someone. I certainly cannot come up with a long time rival.

What about South Melbourne?

Why? Again they are like us and the Demons, no real success so a state v state makes more sense than us playing Sydney.

Fair point, though I fail to remember when the Demons and the Swans had a rivarly!

St Kilda v Footscray/Bulldogs
Won 71 each with three drawn matches
Each won a single flag.
Historically, perennial cellar dwellers.

I agree with the rivalry between us and the Swans as historically, our matches were battles of Albert Park Lake...And, more recently, they kept nicking our Full Forwards/Big Blokes.

The rest of the competition, the umpires, MRP and Demetriou's team.

Especially Demetriou's team.
They sabotaged St Kilda with a bad deal from the beginning at Docklands.
Ensured Essendon had a better deal than any other club - former Essendon president, Ron Evans then AFL chairman was also in charge of Docklands original owners (Spotless Services) at the time.

I don't believe there is any real long standing rivalry between us and the Dogs.
But for me I feel a rivalry since dirty, filthy Gianseracusa knocked out Kosi. And don't tell me it was a fair bump and part of the game because I don't care, and I don't want to hear it. He's a dog in every sense of the word as far as I'm concerned.

(And yes, I know I've misspelt his name. I just don't have enough respect for him to bother looking it up to see how its spelt).

And the long term rivalry between north and brisbane makes for an enticing fixture!
(will north get the bye for rivalry round when GC17 come in?)

HA! That's an interesting one, hadn't considered it. Maybe Collingwood can sit it out, as they're everyone's rival...yeah...I can see that happening. :?

Actually SaintDebi you're closer than you might think - or like. An i instead of an e would have done it.

Makes a mockery of those loomers from Oakleigh on the Footy Show last night trying to spell demeanour.

There's also that draw they held us to in '07 that resulted in us missing finals for the first time in 4 years.

It seems to be their specialty... stuffing up other teams. Taking some glory for themselves seems to be beyond them.

You're understimating the fall out from the Michael Ford and Tony Evans trades. Can't wait for Saturday now - payback time.

That wasn't rivalry, it was (unfortunately for us) comedy.

Clearly it's because we've both only one cup to our names.

Or, maybe Jimmy and Phil and Nicky.

Or, more likely there were two teams left after matching up the rest of the comp.

Id say Freo and Geelong would be our most intense rivals at the moment.

Historically, South Melbourne (Battle of the Lake), and more recently I suppose we could say Sydney as they pinched Lockett, Everitt & Hall (although we got a good deal out of the Lockett trade, and best to see the back of Hall & Everitt anyway).

More recently Geelong was supposed to be the great rival, but they prospered and we faltered.

It could be WB, I suppose. The AFL has paired us up in recent years for rivalry round for no discernable reason. But this year we are both travelling ok, we have won only one flag each and if they beat us this weekend - we will hate them. With a bit of luck we may meet them again in the GF.

IMHFO our our biggest, most bitter rival has been and still is Carlton.

Just have a look at Saintsational in the lead up to, and following each Carlton game - it's far more intense (bar the exceptional Cats game this year!) than all other games.

We HATE the beggars with a real passion, and they are starting to hate us now due to the 12 match streak against them!

We used to HATE them in the 80's as they could buy flags whilst we nearly folded, plus we could never get close to beating them!

Also factor in lots of Blues and Saints fans live in similar areas - plus the Jewish supporters (many of whom are Blues/Saints) - gives another edge to some!
