Worst umpiring decision ever ?

Post: # 786567Post Enrico_Misso »

Dal on the mark.
Waits for ages.
Keeps looking at the ump waiting for a belated play-on call.
Ump mumbles something.
Takes a step off the line.

50m
gift frigging goal.

Then incompetent umpire starts lamely explaining to Dal that he only said move back or something.
Many less composed players would just have exploded at the prick.

"Move it on" said the umpire. His reason for paying the 50m is that he didn't say "play on".

You'd think common sense would prevail and the umpire would just reset the mark.

There was a worse decision though and it went our way. One of the Swans forward gave away a free to Blake for hands in the back (presumably???) when it looked like he had a fingertip on his shoulder at most. Absolute shocker.

I thought the ump had called play on as well.

There were quite a few umpiring mistakes tonight which I found exceptionally frustrating.

The commentators on Foxtel seemed to be only pointing out the ones that Sydney should have been paid though.

"Move it on" shouldn't be used when you're expecting a call of "Play on".
There's a lot of tolerance and compassion in some instances, there should've been one here too.

Usually they call play on half a second after saying 'move it on'. Dal was unlucky.

I thought the LBW against Bell that wasn't given was a pretty poor decision.

Umpires should call "move it" then "play on".

But then that would require an umpires director with a shred of competency.

The same guy who pushed Blake fair square in the middle of the back in the last quarter and then kicked a goal?

The other decision may have been for hands on the shoulder seeing that you pointed out he had his hand on his shoulder. Not saying it was a free but I thought that was what it was paid for.

I'd like to see the replay of the Dal one. He was watching the umpire so I thought he was reacting to a signal rather than a call.

+++++ 1
Exactly !

Dal would have assumed he was doing everything right.

Firstly because after an eternity it should have been play on.
Secondly because he was watching the umpire for the signal which he thought had been given.

But the ump seemed to think he should have been able to distinguish between subtle nuances of dialect over the top of 30,000 screaming morons.

I thought Gary Ablett Snr's 'barely touched' classic mark was the worst umpiring decision ever. :|

Agreed, crappy decision. How in the hell can the umpire tell the player to move it on and expect the man on the mark not to interpret it as play on..??

Poor Dal looked devastated after the 50m Penalty. To his credit, he worked his butt off to make it up to the team. Rooey went straight up to him after the decision and showed us all why he is the captain of our club.

You'd think common sense would prevail and the umpire would just reset the mark.
So every time an umpire says "move it on", which umpires say all the time, the player on the mark can just run forward in an attempt to waste some time knowing all the umpire will do is reset the mark and not pay 50?

Maybe you should show some common sense.

Umpires always say "move it on" before "play on". ALWAYS. Dal was just a little too eager on that occasion.

Dal Santo was looking at the umpire. Watch the replay.

Please do not compare Sydney supporters to morons.
Morons do not deserve to be insulted in such a manner.

If Dal was looking at the umpire he should have been waiting for the "play on" signal which is the umpire raising both hands in the air. Hard to miss that one.

The umpire ALWAYS says "move it on" while making a forward-sweeping motion with his hand before calling "play on" when the player with the footy is taking his time in disposing of it.

To suggest that the ump should just reset the mark is wrong. Can you imagine how many players will suddenly become hard of hearing?

"Oh, I thought you said "play on"... sorry, just reset the mark then."

We're in Round 18, I have not seen a player get something like that wrong all year.

Dal was either too eager or wasn't concentrating. End of.

Enough of this St Kilda persecution complex. Not everyone is out to get us.

In the umps defence, they use 'Move it on' all time. It's not like it's a once off.

Did the umps hand go on the air to indicate play on? If not, Dal is at fault

Only if you're 100% sure that the umpire didn't say or signal play on. Dal was looking directly at the umpire and if I'm not mistaken he's been playing footy for a few years. If the umpire didn't make a mistake, it was a huge brain fade from Dal.

hey guys, i was at the game sitting very close to the incident.

thre was a very smiilar situation the previous kick where 'move it on' was quickly followed by the 'play on call'.

although I was angry witht he decision at the time, I was able to determine the difference between the two calls and initially thought 'dal is in trouble here' when he moved forward. dal was unlucky but unfortunately the umpire got it right. even though it seemed to fly in the face of common sense. i guess what we want is a bit of consistency going the other way though...

the free kick AGAINST Burke, when burke was in front and broke his leg a few years ago was the worst decision ever.

HOW CAN YOU PUSH SOMEONE IN THE BACK WHEN YOUR IN FRONT?

from where i was sitting hte umpire signalled push in the pack AGAINST Burke when burke was in front and over the ball...

Agree that technically the right call and Dal's mistake but seriously umpires need to STFU, they only need to open their mouths 5 times; "free kick for...", "My ball", "Play on", "Advantage, play on" or "No advantage" and "Time"

Why the need to tell players what to do "Move it on" or "Get it out" etc, just shut up and concentrate on getting their decisions right and not what the player has to do.

Numbers on their backs, coloured clothing, umpire collectors cards, being miked up...they think they're personalities and feel the need to involve themselves more than they need to.
