Good to see his old team-mates coming to his aid.

I saw him play his first game. His display set the footy world on fire. He just crashed the packs and took a couple of screamers. Kicking was a bit off line and he had his own way of dropping the ball point-end on to his boot.
Really good to see old and new mates rallying around.

I was at his first game too. Cant remember who we played. Carl was outstanding. Cant remember a debut as spectacular from a 17 yr old.

I don't get it how that debt came about.

Something to do with a water pipe, and his dad agreeing to it. But agreeeing to what and why was he charged with it?

Sounds like they were building a regional pipe extension - I think in those cases they usually charge the farmers who'll benefit from it. Obviously the father-in-law agreed to that but sounds like it was commercially a pretty bad call. So the case probably centres on whether the father-in-law was competent to agree to it.

His first game at the junction oval against Melbourne was probably one of

the most remarkable debut games ever seen.

Three other ok players made a big impact in their first games that day.

Bob Murray, Jim Wallis and a youngster named Ian Stewart who also starred.

Certainly the most outstanding contribution made by a group of first game

players for any club in my memory.

......yep Melbourne, and he was up against Graeme Wise, who was going to be the next big thing, ruckman the Dees had recruited from Tassie. Whereas Carl was completely unheralded. That famous photo of Carl parked on top of opposing ruckman's left shoulder at a boundary throw in, depicted what happened at most boundary throw ins that day and it was a horrible day for Wisey.

He was everywhere that day......just everywhere...awesome.

Never seen anything like it. No-one that was there could ever possibly forget it.

He Kicked the ball at one stage (went higher than distance) and ran like a hare and nearly took pack mark to grab it again.

Go you good things....!!!

rollo from demonology/demonland checking in (with your permission of course)...

hope you take the final step in the gf this year...

I have posted on our sites that I will be ashamed if all the talk on Carl comes from the melbourne footy club while all the action comes from you guys...

I will be back to talk about Carl when your season ends...

hope it ends well !!

P.S. I was at that game. Talk about white line fever !! Any wonder that Melbourne tried so hard to get him when he came out of contract? And we did, and we owe him...

during this protracted litigation, I told Carl at one stage that we play you guys every year for the "Big Carl" cup - he said we were crazy, but I assured him that only the saintsational people are crazy...

regards,

rollo

Yep, I can forget him towelling up Barrassi, because he didn't play on Ronald Dale ever.

Not contradicting you, just saying your memory may not be correct.

Carl was a ruckman and he never played on Barrassi. He may have beaten him in a contest or two, but he never towelled him up.

Carl was a pure ruckman that day and took the game by the balls with his mobility and aggression.

don't want to fan the flames...

and you guys have more urgent things on your minds right now...

but I was at the game, and my recollection was that Carl played in the ruck, tore Wise apart, and beat every other opponent (including Barassi) in numerous individual contests...

my abiding memory was a bloke called Thorogood, who played for thr dees and was all of 5'8", and decided to take on Carl in the last quarter (when it was all over)...

instead of laying him out, Carl laughed and pointed at the scoreboard...

(I have an idea that Carl that day started that particular fashion)...

regards,

rollo

you are of course correct...but so am i.....in those days sides played up to four ruckmen...usually two on the ball one resting in the forward pocket the other in the back poket..two pure ruckmen and one able to play a type of ruck rover game..barrassi was the first real ruck rover type to play the game...later on we had payze and barry pascoe.....but before that we had big carl.....i have spoken about that day on several occasions to barrassi.....carl towelled him up...beat him comprehensively...denied by ronald dale of course...but he has never said that ditterich did not play on him...he did.....thrashed him...and patted him on the head as i stated before....played as a ruckman as well.....taking the tap...gawd he could leap....
