Gwilt ?

Post: # 897395Post Enrico_Misso »

Serviceable.
Couple of very costly turnovers.

Will he hold his place when Sam and Raph come back?

I thought Gwilt was good tonight.
One of those costly turnovers was due to him losing his footing on the crap playing surface.

He easily did enough. Unlucky to slip at one point, but a can't recall any complete howlers. And for the most part he was playing Goodes who was red hot. Thought he was fine. Much more solid and than the Raphmeister.

Indeed...as the bits where Goodes get loose were mainly quite freakish bits which are almost impossible to prevent.

Yep, I liked Gwilt's attack on the ball tonight, played agressively

Was rusty like the rest of the side.

Serviceable game.

I prefer him over Raph, just like his size and footskills, and better use of his body in the contest.

Thought he was solid.

No one was really on fire for 4 quarters tonight. For what it's worth I thought Gwilty did okay.

I don't really see the need to pick between him & Raph though - they played in the same side often enough last year. When Raph returns it won't necessarily be at the expense of Gwilt.

Made a couple of errors (who doesn't) but overall I was really pleased with his game. Used it better than normal and seems to have more confidence. I reckon Goodes did some great things and obviously is a quality player. Couldn't have seen Sam Fisher doing a better job to be honest. Goodes only had about 15-16 possesions. They were all quality, but he wasn't best on ground imo. Riewoldt was clearly the dominant fwd.

Gwilt looked surer than he normally does and took the game on a bit. He's a beautiful kick as well. For mine will DEFINITELY hold his spot.

Not his best game, in my opinon, but pretty OK
I really think he's gone up a notch from last season though. So his middling game tonight is the equivalent of some of his better ones last year.
I suddenly feel confident in him. And forgiving of the odd lapse -- I really think he's now established himself as better than that.

I like Gwilt, but last night he continued to demonstrate how much of a liability his one-footedness can be in the backline. He tried on one occasion to pass the ball with his right foot and.....oh dear. A couple of other times when he wasn't able to wheel around and use his left foot, he tried look away handpasses and......oh dear again.

If he could just learn to hack the ball a reasonable distance upfield with his wrong foot like other one-footed players do.

I think he's improved in other areas and this is now the main thing holding him back.

It was pretty hard to make a good assessment of any player on that terrible surface. Damn lucky someone wasn't badly injured!

Agree he's a bit one sided but can kick on his right a hell of a lot better than Gilbert.

As long as he does all the other things well it's not a hanging offence. Many really good players can only go one way :)

I hope they persist with Jimmy down there, especially when he can play on someone a little shorter and lighter than Goodes. I really love it when he takes the game on a tries to run through packs and break the lines. I hope to see a lot more of it.

Gwilt tried his guts out last night and was very serviceable.

I get the feeling he has the ability to kick ass, but just needs to believe in himself.

Totally agree.

He looks like he's on the verge, just on the verge of become a great player.

Just a few tiny things need to improve on.

Gwilt will never be a great player. In fact I doubt he'll ever be in our top 16. But he can be a serviceable flanker who can be relied on to hold the opposition's third tall/medium forward and give a bit of drive from defence as well.

If last night was his standard game (and I suspect it was) then he'll probably keep his spot for most of the year. He's not a key player and he's not a hack, just a solid, AFL-ready option.
