Who was Fisher's opponent and who told him to go forward?
Just curious whether Fisher decided to go forward or whether he got the message to go forward....and who was his opponent?

I noticed Mitch Hahn drifting about on his own during that passage of play - looking for the quick shovel out no doubt. I think he was the culprit.

Fisher was on the Thug in the first half but Dawson went to the Thug for the second half.
I remember Fisher was on a half back flank on Johnno.
That Fisher goal wiped the smile off kick chasing Johnno's face.

considering that there were players from both sides without an opponent, by that stage, someone was always going to get burnt. saints are just lucky it wasn't them. that sort of chaos is guaranteed to end badly.ace wrote:Fisher was on the Thug in the first half but Dawson went to the Thug for the second half.

St Kilda was behind at three quarter time and remained that way up until time on.bergholt wrote:considering that there were players from both sides without an opponent, by that stage, someone was always going to get burnt. saints are just lucky it wasn't them. that sort of chaos is guaranteed to end badly.
But St Kilda rolled the dice, kick outs down the centre of the ground, playing direct down the corridor.
More so as the quarter rolled on.
Once the Saints hit the front they reverted to a total defence and shut the puppies out.
Someone was going to get burned.
Either St Kilda would lose by a larger margin or close the gap.
Either way St Kilda had nothing to lose.
The puppies had a game to lose and they did.
They lost because they did not play with the same defensive discipline as St Kilda.

Clearly we weren't the only ones flooding back. All game the doggies had all 18 players dropping back into our forwardline. In that frantic last 5 mins - they had everyone back. But chippa went front and centre and he got the handball, he was clear and took the shot with composure. In the end, we had the experience and composure they didn't.
I want to stand for something. I'm a loyal person and I think at the end of my career it will be great to look back and know that I'm a St Kilda person for life.

Fisher was loose.
He's the best reader of the play I've seen in a while.
Used to be a real strength of mine so I get very critical of players running to the wrong spots or standing in the wrong spots - particularly when playing loose.
Some 'loose men' play the role too safe, and therefore don't really make the most of what is a real weapon.
I remember watching Fisher at the G some time when he just starting to play the loose man role. I commented to my mate that he was about 20m too forward and the nut would go straight over his head.
Seconds later the ball landed straight in his lap.
Later in the game the same thing happened. I felt he should have pushed wider, but again moments later the ball came straight to him.
Since then I've watched him closely and he's brilliant at it. He really knows when to attack in the role and push forward - which is what happened on Friday.
Some playing this role will choose to just fill holes. Some will use the role to play '3rd man up'.
Fisher has the ability to do both but also be very attacking.
Very, very good footballer is Sam Fisher.

Hahn was his opponent at the time though, in that contest anyway.

People may forget or not know that we had heaps more hard ball gets in the third term than the first half - we squared up the ledger in one term alone.
Problem was we couldn't get drive from half forward in term three - so apart from finishing work we were showing signs of getting into the game.
Saying that, the Dogs should've iced the match early in the last if they had kicked at goal properly.
Losers!

Re: Who was Fisher's opponent and who told him to go forward
given that at times there were 36 players with in any given 50 metre zone technically he may not have been forward - he was out the back - so in the backline that was so far up the ground it was part of the forward lineMilan Faletic wrote:Just curious whether Fisher decided to go forward or whether he got the message to go forward....and who was his opponent?

Shame
I was hoping it was Numb-Skull.
Would have been the perfect end to a rubbish night from the "Time-Bomb", having contributed almost nothing, and given away that free that might have cost them the game.

What I meant to say was "it was an area that I focussed on alot as it gave you cheap kicks and meant you had to run less if you were smart about it".
Really, the point I was trying to make was that I watch this closely.

Well - now that we know RF is actually the great Ian Stewart - who is the only player I can think of who played for us who would deserve the arrogance to proclaim he read the play as well as Fisher.
Now we can give his posts the respect they deserve!!
PS I am sure Harves and Burkie etc would have greater humility than to make this personal assessment - I picked Stewie coz as centreman of the AFL team of the century he could easily state this without blinking.
What were we discussing again? Oh yes - the great win!
Reporters on ABC this morning said it was like Mohammud Ali - not landing a punch until the opposition was exhausted - then BANG - the KNOCKOUT!
Exactly!

This is a team game and there is no room for individuals who think they are above walking through the fire.
