Goddard is a bona fide star who has developed natural talent into consistent results through sheer hard work and plenty of football education. Which takes time.

Not a single club wouldn't fall over itself to pick him up now, or indeed, any of that 2002 group. Yet not one of them had registered so much as a blip on the AFL radar after three or, in some cases, four years. Proving again that while patience isn't a noted trait in football, the best can come the way of those prepared to wait at least a while
