Next Week

Post: # 1051999Post Junction Oval »

No need to panic yet, but a touch of new blood is worth a look at.

Cripps for McQualter & Lynch to add some forward bulk, for Peake.

Some poor efforts from Gamble last night, but persevere with him for a few games to see what he can contribute.

Forward entry & structure needs loads of work this week. Surely, double/triple teaming of Riewoldt opens other options.

For next week McQualter absolutely has to go, and I don't see much of a case for Peake staying. We need to cut down to one of Dempster, Jones and Baker but I honestly don't see it happening.

Hopefully

OUT: McQualter, Peake, Jones, Baker
IN: Steven, Archer, Cripps, Smith

Probably

OUT: Armitage
IN: Geary

We'd still be too small I reckon, need at least one more tall.

Agree with all of these omissions, except the Jones one seems a little severe.

B: Dempster, Dawson, Gwilt
HB: Clarke, Blake, Fisher
C: Montagna, Hayes, Ray
HF: Armitage, Riewoldt, Gilbert
F: Milne, Archer, Gamble

Foll: McEvoy, Dal Santo, Goddard
Int: Gram, Steven, Smith
Sub: Cripps

Dawson, Blake and Gwilt to take tall forwards
McEvoy and Archer to swap between ruck and forward
Roo permanent forward option with Gilbert, Gamble and Goddard providing an option as well. There's 6 marking options for the forward line as well as Milne and Armo who are both strong marks for their size.

That's why I included Tom Lynch - he's the same height as Riewoldt, but a bit lighter at the moment.

Any chance of this happening :?:

I just don't see him ever having a positive impact. He tries his guts out and runs hard but whenever he gets the ball he either doesn't hit a teammate or he gives it to someone under pressure. With him in the centre square we're always at a disadvantage. It's his lack of footy smarts and skills that typifies the problem with the team.

but jones does a defensive job in the midfeild ... i would rather Jones with his dodgy kick trying his guts out than Grams dodgy kicks and 1/4 efforets ...

Archer showed in the pre season that he attacks the game with everything he's got and has a very strong body. I saw him on TV in the first NAB cup round and wasn't impressed, but after seeing him live over the next couple of weeks I thought much more highly of him. No, he's not going to get 20 touches and kick 4 goals, but he just involves himself in every contest possible, splits packs open and uses the ball pretty well. His endurance was surprisingly good as well, sitting near the bench I saw that every time he came off he was absolutely stuffed, but he'd go back on and go just as hard every time.

If he plays, he'll provide a strong marking option in the forward line (and demand a quality tall defender), apply strong defensive pressure and be able to handle a bit of time in the ruck to rest McEvoy. He might only get 10 possessions, 1 goal and 5 hitouts but he'd straighten up the team and be a valuable contributer. Unlike Stanley, he already has the size and willingness to involve himself in the game required at AFL level.

If you take form into account, Cahill kicked six today, Al Smith and Geary among the best, with Cripps mentioned.

I would hope that Al Smith and Geary and Cripps get a run next week.

I'm getting pretty damn sick of players in the team to negate the opposition. Who plays in Collingwood's midfield to negate an opponent and provide nothing the other way? I'd much rather have a skilled midfielder who is accountable than a struggler watching his opponent all day.

most teams have a tagger and jones does a good job limiting the effect of his opponent ... he also wins his fair share of the ball yes his dispossal lets him down but hey he isnt freddy no friends in that respect ... at least Jones tackles and blocks ... Gram is just as bad with disposal yet tackles like a wet tissue and shirks the contest .... i would remove 5 players before removing Jones

1 Gram
2 Mini
3 Dempster
4 Peak
5 Baker

all 5 offer less then CJ does

My tip is unchanged barring injury.

Let the boys settle and have a good win against a bye team that is Jack Reiwoldt + no one else.

I think Jack will be good but he hasnt even played a practice game. Cannot play. And at least pick guys in form. Did Cripps do anything today? Archer will not help at all. We need guys in form who can run. Not sure there will be many if any changes apart from injury.

Thats the spirit......keep the same 22.....

why on earth would we want the team to evolve and introduce more skillful players when we can keep producing that rubbish....

There may be 1 change, maybe 2, since we're playing Richmond (who don't go too badly against us), but not wholesale changes...forget about it, we're not going to miss the finals and we don't need to rebuild.

i do agree there is no point in change for the sake of change and it was only the first hit out ... but somthing has to be said to some of te boys about their game last night ... its just not on

You can put certain players on notice without dropping them.

I'm not convinced any of our magoo players are better than our 22 last night.

Sorry to be a realist!

your prob. right ... but i would hope a few players on notice will actually lift ...especially gram ... because we know he is much better than he has been showing

Plugger said it earlier, Archer will not add anything. From what i saw in the pre-season he shouldnt be near the side for a while.

Maybe, but I reckon Al Smith deserves a chance to show what he's got.

Stanley, Steven, Heyne and Lynch have all had an opportunity however Smith has been named as an emergency something like 6 times without getting his call up. He's been solid/impressive in NAB Cup both this year and last year and consistently gets named in the best for Sandy.

Only one way find out whether he's up to it or not.
