Goal Kicking

Post: # 1055623Post older saint »

I would have hoped after the choking in front of goals that was the 2009 Grand Final the club/coaches/ players would have made accuracy infront of goal a priority.

We lost games last year due to bad kicking and the importance of it showed in the draw as if Collingwood had have kicked straight early we wuold not have got close.

We have now played 2 games which should have been in total scoreboard control of at quarter time and not won either.

Much is made of Roo and his bad kicking for goal but as a set shot Milne is average at best , Gilbert kicks like an old fashion backman, and even skilled players like Dal stagger and differ on each appraoch to goal.

Clearly we are going to get less opportunities this year so capitalising will be critical .

Basic skill which does not get the attention it should.

From another thread, apparently, Paul Hudson who has joined the Saints, was Collingwood's skills/kicking coach. Let's hope we double our efforts in this area.

However, it seems that by the time players get to AFL level, they are set in their kicking styles. On the training track, they all look to have great skills, but "under pressure" they revert to their old habits. Not an easy or short term fix.

It seems that directional/pin-point "kicking skills" have gone under the "recruitng" radar - Jones, Peake, Gilbert, Gram, Dempster to name a few. :!:

Why not get to like kicking for goal?

Post: # 1055704Post Megamaguire »

Again the Saints looked like they just don't enjoy kicking for goal- a stack of our senior players Dal and Montagna included just create despair when they squander hard earned opportunities.

Kicking for goal looks like it needs to be a more fun part of training.

GOAL KICKING HAS BECOME A MAJOR OBSTACLE TO THIS TEAM PROGRESSING!

C'mon Saints!

The boy can play and we can build a defence around him that will have respect.

At least now we have one good kick for goal on our list. Aaron Sipposs.

I know it isn't this simple, but the great Tony Lockett was and always will be the best kick for goal to ever play the game. I heard Plugger say once that he used to forget the goals and kick for and to the goal umpire because he normally stands in the middle of the goals.
Could it be this simple? I mean they can hit a player in the chest from 50 metres away but can't kick it through this huge gap between a pair of posts? Maybe we need the great man back to show the guys a few things!

When Harvey played his first game in 1988, I was a 12yo wearing short pants and struggling with my readin', writin' and 'rithmetic in grade eight. Now, I'm a father of three and a retired AFL player. And he's still going. Amazing! - Michael Voss

I think getting him back last year for his hall of fame or whatever was a huge task in itself, to get him back to assist the club develop would be nearly impossible i would think especially as he lives just out of Sydney and has more outside interests now than footy to keep him busy.

Not many can hit a teammate either. Our kicking in general is a disgrace.

Hell if Stewie Loewe could go from being a bad kick at goal to a reliable one due to some simple adjustments from Peter Hudson, any of these guys should be able to do it.
Both Dal and Montagna do not kick enough goals and yet they seem very reliable kicks when comes to hitting a moving target 40-50 metres away.

Except for the sanity nothing much has been lost.

I've heard Ross say on radio that they limit the amount of time spent on goal kicking at training because the conditioning staff are concerned about the prospect of soft tissue injuries, and Ross bows to their judgement.

Well to hell with that!!!!!!
You don't see top golfers not practising their swing because they don't want to strain themselves!

We should have them practising goal kicking till they get it right.
If that means a two hour goal kicking session each day then fine.
They are full time professional athletes.
Time is not an issue.

Make them repeat the process from a variety of angles and distances over and over and over and over and over ................ again.
Till they get a reliable action.

So what if we get the odd soft tissue injury.
At least we might start kicking some clutch goals and winning a few matches.

Fact is that, since Voss' retirement, we haven't had a single player who is a reliable kick for goal . Schneider comes closest but even he misses when it really matters.

Slightly off topic, but we also don't have a single player who is quick enough to run around and away from an opponent. Richmond have 3 or 4.

With Lenny out, we also don't have a single player who can make a tackle stick when the opposition player is other than stationary.

Roo's action a perfect case in point. His set shots on Fri night were nothing like the "hed over the ball" action he showed in the NAB cup or during the warmup.

Bakes. 6 of 'em on the weekend.

Yes, our kicking is bad...every single team on the weekend kicked badly! Amazing. West Coast, Hawks were the worst.

I'd call Goddard pretty reliable in front of goal.

Our style of play isn't a help, we don't get the ball deep enough into the forward line quick enough. I was looking at Collingwood, and their midfield go straight to full forward at every chance, none of this messing around trying to set things up and slowing down the play. I feel the conditions last Friday night may have been a bit to blame for near misses at goal.

Always though goal kicking has swings and roundabouts. Last year we were accurate for a while and then we werent. No reason just happens. We have inaccurate so far this year and it will eventually change and then probably change again.

And when we do there's often no one to go to.

Too many numbers behind the ball.

We need to move it quicker. True, we don't have extreme leg speed, but the ball travels quicker through the air than anyone can run.

Because there is 30 seconds to get him off otherwise if you do it in general play you are a man short.

Reading between the lines, but I think he means the goal kicker specifically...used to be a very peculiar habit of ours, which other clubs have been doing this year (maybe just a coincidence that I've seen a few in other examples matches).

I reckon most clubs have done it for the last 5-6 years. If an onballer kicks a goal and he has played about 6-8 minutes he is due for a rotation anyway. if he had only played a minute he wouldnt come off. If Rooy kicks a goal he is most likely to stay out there. I actually reckon we lost the first game because of rotations. It hasnt been brought up but when Lenny kicked our last goal with just 3 minutes left he and Big Ben came off. Surely they could have got 3 minutes into their bodies. Ben never came back on and Lenny did with 20 seconds left. Now that to me is a stupid rotation especially looking at what Blake did in the ruck in the last 3 minutes like playing on after a mark with 50 seconds to go.

Is the comp on limited rotations due to the sub rule now? Sorry, I missed whether this happened or not.
