Hopefully it means that now he will make big changes.
Last year as the reigning grand finalist he couldn't justify making deep changes.
But this year he can.
He needs to go through the list and ask serious questions.
- do they have the skills?
- do they have the heart?
- will they stand up on the big stage?
For the ones that don't - see ya later.
(And I think we all have a pretty good idea who they are).
The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.
They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!
Can't believe he'd walk away leaving behind a team full of imported hacks and undeveloped kids.
Can't believe he'd do that.
As Caro said, Ross Lyon has been good to St Kilda but St Kilda has been equally good to Ross Lyon. Letting the coaching speculation simmer in the approach to the finals was no credit to either party (and may have contributed to the loss).
Stacking an unlikely finals contender with old stagers was also a big mistake. This isn't a case of Monday's Experts (because many have said it here before), but why weren't some kids (Walsh, anyone?) given a taste of finals pressure in preparation for next year?
Hopefully it means that now he will make big changes.

Well name them. its good for a conversation and the season is over so I reckon we are entitled to have an idea on who people think should go. I will go with mine. Obviously MG, Bakes, Mini and Eddy. Heyne to the rookie list as he has a contract. Johnson I think will go baring a contract. Cahill will go. Walsh upgraded and Archer, Gaertner and maybe Andreoli to go from the rookie list. That is plenty in one year i reckon. As for trades everyone is tradable.
Now for the re-build - at least we will now see the young guys given an opprtunity to show their wears. Let's hope that we don't destroy them in the process. If you listen to Guy McKenna, he knows that young bodies can't handle AFL intensity for a full year - just look at our injured guys this year.
Also, let's hope that the Coach remains as one of our key building blocks.
He was outsmarted last night......needs to rethink his approach.....rarely do you see such a trouncing
His third qtr nothing to lose approach....man on man... Elements can be put into actual plan
What worked three years ago, doesnt work now....
The defensive style game plan, with numbers back....surely has to be addressed.....for one, we dont have a power fwd or power ruckman to enable success with such a plan

I would think our coach is a very smart coach and he coaches the way he does because he thinks it is the best way for the type of players he has.
That is one of the most succinct posts you've made plugger, absolutely nailed it and I couldn't agree more.
Ross has been in charge of a playing group that for a large part of the year has been shifting like quicksand, never know what you're going to get on the night. It was a great effort to get back in the top 8 but even if you crunch only the numbers from the second half of the year it's clear that 6th spot was about right and may have even flattered... as was made evident last night.
There may be one last shot in the gun for this generation, and it might be that the depth of this year's draft will make the decision for them, but if there's talent to be had it's time to grab it.
"... You want to pose a threat to the opposition in as many ways as you can, both defensively and offensively. We've got a responsibility to explore all those possibilities - and we will."
Geez this defensive game plan discussion gives me the shites
Lyon got out coached, our players are too defensive boo hoo
The list this year is shot, the team out there last night was our worst for the year. Without our very best playing their best we can't compete at that level. The swans had gooses and okeefe and mcveigh at their best when it counted, and their 3rd tier lift around them. Roo and Milne miss crucial goals and joey goes missing again and we blames the bottom players.
Roo can barely move, the whole game plan is based around him, that's the issue. Missing gardiner was crucial too, should of played.
But hey let's play attacking footy again and throw away the best coach we have had in 30 years. Both the cats and pies play defensive footy, the difference is their very best are on the park the whole time fit, ours aren't, this year anyway.
Bad coaching, pfft.
If Lyon leaves who would blame him, this us why we have the history we have, we can't tough it out. At the end of '08 who saw '09 coming? I see next year as no different.

Then we made decisions on the run.....
Knock out a team's most important player in round 2 of the season, and decisions will have to be made on the run... is that the best you've got?

Then we were no good to begin with....not sure even lenny has been soley responsible for our demise.....
He was replaced by steven....with most suggesting steven did an ok job....
Steven's good, and will get better, but may never equal Lenny - and who would you fault for that - Lenny is a champ.
We've had 5 or 6 stars and the talent drops away sharply after that - for years...
Take out any one of them and the team suffers greatly. To suggest otherwise is disingenuous.
So maybe your point stands that we were no good to begin with.
