Ben McEvoy was rubbished and written off in the press all week. According to anyone you spoke to, he was too young, got beaten by Mumford last time and should have been dropped or subbed in favour of Gardiner ...

Last night at half time the hitout stats were Mumford 15 and McEvoy 14 hitouts.

By the end of the game, Mumford had snuck ahead in the hitouts (finished 30 to 20), but that was due in large part to the final quarter when he got on top of McEvoy and our entire midfield was smashed.

McEvoy took 6 marks, of which 5 were contested. He saved a couple of deep Sydney entries with some huge grabs, and I thought he had more of an influence than Mumford around the ground.

So kudos to Ben.

He defied his critics and produced a good game under pressure and really stood up for us in a final when we needed him.

After a year of steady improvement he will be been better next year.

e is already arguably the best around the ground contested mark in the AFL....and so now mainly just needs to keep honing his ruckwork.

yes, good call. Played well to finish off an excellent year. Hopefully his game can rise to still further heights.

People forget how young he is. Around the ground he reminds me of Cox. Hopefully he can learn to dominate the ruck too.

Will prove to be one of our better picks. Kruezer went at No.1 but I think Big Ben is up there with him.

Very good year, shouldered a lot for such a young man.

Once he gets some help, I'd like to see him drift forward and be damaging too, good set of hands and can kick a goal (sore more of that last year from memory)

Don't think he should play 22 out of 23 again next season especially with 1 bye again.

A reasonably mature understudy would be nice IMO.

Outstanding year from Ben and was very good again last night. Easily our best early and if a few others had started like him then who knows? Modern football doesnt allow you to pick 2 genuine rucks unless they pick themselves Ie Cox and Natinui. This actually seems to have benefitted the likes of Mac Goldstein and mummy who seem to love the responsibility of the number 1 spot!

Top 5 in the B&F IMO

Maybe this year?

I've been delighted with him throughout most of the season. He's got some bloody good hands on him also. He's taken some terrific grabs this season. Good one Benny!

When they created LENNY HAYES (in the shadow of Harvs) they forgot to break the mold (again)- hence the Supremely Incredible Jack Steven!!

sep 2011 - future champion, love him!

turned me around!

I think Ben learnt a hell of a lot from the loss up in Sydney.

I'm so rapt with the way he's come on this year and looking forward to the next 10 years - that is, as long as the new clubs don't come knocking on our door with a ridiculous offer...
