Saints Community Camp - Feb 13-14

Post: # 1186804Post stkildathunda »

St Kilda will be in Bairnsdale/Lakes Entrance on Feb 13-14 as part of the 2012 Australia Post AFL community camps.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/ ... fault.aspx

Players from every club will travel to regional and rural communities, visiting schools, nursing homes and hospitals and conducting clinics.

AFL national and international development general manager Andrew Dillon said the camps would give supporters a chance to meet their heroes.

"The annual camps are a highlight of the year for many football fans who don't have the opportunity to see their football idols every week during the season," Dillon said.

What happens at a community camp? There is a large Aboriginal group at Lake Tyers (near Bairnsdale), the teenage boys are involved in an Aussie Rules support program there. Something to do with that maybe?

Pretty sure community camps are something GT pioneered, with footy teams basically spending a few days in a smallish town and holding clinics/mingling with locals/doing various team activities.

he did- although the original involved the team staying a few days= not overnight- or just visiting as some teams do,
and they actually did some 'Community activity" ie painting, gardening, physically assisting- not just visiting homes and community facilities.

Great for the fans in Bairnsdale however, at the end of the day it is easier for them to get to a game than fans that live interstate.

Us interstaters have had a bum deal the last few years.
