Yet another reason why I hate Dimwit

Post: # 1199527Post Enrico_Misso »

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/r ... 1vkbt.html

The man is so obsessed with setting up a team out in the barren falafel-eating wastelands of western Sydney - despite the fact that Sydney can't support one team based near the coast without massive handouts - that he ignores all logic and treats a well researched bid by Tasmania with arrogance and disdain.

Plus he clearly thinks he is much more important than the Tasmanian Premier and has the gall to snub him.

Says a lot about Dimwit's character.

Great quote from Saul Eslake who was part of the delegation ...
''He has this particular blind spot about Sydney. It strikes me as odd, that for a guy who comes from a small island off the coast of one large continent, he's so unsympathetic to the legitimate claims of another small island off a large continent to play the game.''

So under Dimwit we have gone ahead and created a team that is doomed to fail at the expense of recognising a heartland state that would thrive with an AFL team.

They should relocate.

Tassie Tigers or
Tasmanian Kangaroos (North Hobart)

I think 18 teams is tha absolute max.

this has been covered to death.

facts are Tasmania doesnt have the growth or potential of the GWS. if Tasmania was granted the licence instead of gws it would have meant the end to the north and possibly hawthorn agreement. for what??? to just give them a side???

GWS has the potential to enrich the league and provide another source of income and support, whilst leaving tasmania to the victorian clubs that need another source of income and support.

GWS will succeed its just a matter of time.

i can see north melbourne being re-branded (Tasmanian Kangaroos/North Hobart/what ever) and spending the majority of their time in tasmania. maybe 1-3 home games in victoria. victorian supporters will still get to see their club at away games or they cross the pond. one of the other things the article didnt touch on is the division between north and south tasmania

38000 turned up last night in Sydney. 2nd highest crowd ever for the 1st game of a new entity. Not a bad effort by the old Sydneysiders.

Are there 38000 people in Tassie?

There maybe but they would have to play it at 3 grounds.

Gees I feel like I ingested something odd after reading Gaz's post, If your Taswegian and in the delegation party you might keep off what ever that stuff is next time.

Demetriou is selling the soul of the game and killing the spirit of football, the very thing that makes our game great.

Demetriou's job is not just about growing the game as a business, for the true value of football is not in the money it can generate but in it's cultural ethos that actually connects it to people and has the power to change peoples lives on a personal level. As guardian/custodian of the game of Australian Rules Football, Demetriou's first responsibility is to acknowledge and nurture this ethos or "spirit" of the game by rewarding the people who are passionate about the game, who love it and live it and bleed for it. His job is about more than just growing the product from a business point of view, because football is about so much more than just dollars and cents. The true value of football is in the joy and passion of the supporters, the country clubs that bind communities, the kids in the park having a kick and formulating dreams. It's those kinds of things, along with the moral values that go along with with them, things like loyalty, honor, pride-in-the-jumper, etc, that we know as spirit of football, and that's where the true beauty and value of the game lies, that's what makes our game great.

Clearly, Demetriou has been negligent in his duty. No one in GWS gives a stuff about AFL football, whereas Tassie already has a long-standing football culture comprised of true football people with a love and passion for the game. The spirit of football is alive and well in Tassie, and Demetriou is obligated to nurture and harness that spirit by giving it the focal point of an AFL club, built on the already existing football culture present. A Tassie team would greatly enrich the overall AFL culture, it would acknowledge and nurture the needs of the spirit football, which in turn would make the game stronger and more relevant than any amount of money ever could.

But instead of actually paying attention to the spirit of football, instead of being a conscientiousness and attentive servant to the game of football and establishing a club where it is needed and wanted and required and useful, Demetriou just decides to manufacture a club out of nothing, built on no pre-existing football culture, a club with no relevence, meaning, credibility or identity. A bastard-child of a club built on the blood, sweat and tears of people it neither recognizes nor acknowledges. Fabricated into existence not in the best interests of football itself but in the best interests of the AFL and Demetriou personally. Demetriou should be forced to resign for holding the game in contempt. Football does not belong to him, it doesn't belong to the AFL, it doesn't belong to the administrators, it belongs to all the thousands of people involved at all levels all across the land, from mums driving kids to games to elite coaches and players pursuing a world-class standard of excellence, who day after day, week after week and year after year actually GIVE to the game, who actually invest in the game not with their money but with their hearts and souls and who in so doing imbue the game with a spirit, a relevance, a meaning, a significance that has the power to affect people's lives. Demetriou's responsibility, as custodian of the game, is to nurture that spirit, to respect that ethos, that thing that makes football great, but he appears not just willing but eager to neglect it in favour of corporate expansion.

To say that it's better to go into GWS rather than Tassie because there is a bigger market there is a moot point. Yes, there is more money to be made in GWS, but it's going to take a hell of a lot more time and effort and millions and millions of dollars in a market that is at best apathetic and at worse openly hostile to get an end result of a club that gives to the game in that it turns a profit but which culturally and spiritually enriches the game not at all or at best only slightly. For HALF the amount of time and money that they're pumping into GWS the AFL could have created a flourishing, strong football club in Tassie that truly enriches the game culturally and rewards people and fans who actually deserve it and is of course economically profitable for the AFL.

Demetriou has become a dictator. The power has gotten to him and rotted him away from the inside and he's now totally corrupt. He thinks that he owns the game of football and there is a real danger now that he'll go berserk and completely neglect the ethos of the game by continually expanding into footballing culturally bankrupt markets just to increase his bottom line and hence his paypacket, not to mention continue to change the rules beyond any form of recognition to have a more sellable product, and in 10-15 years time he'll leave us with a complete bastardization of the game of football which lacks all the conviction of spirit that makes our game great.

Very emotive post and will get the ones who dont think down the track clapping their hands. Others who see into the future will just say it is words that look good but mean little. The AFL have already had a huge win with the TV contract. it will only get bigger.

Football revenue has to grow whether grass root supporters agree or not, otherwise it will end up basically broke like the VFL in the mid 80's.
