It's certainly got to do with free agency and the looming threat of GWS, no doubt," Montagna said on SEN's Morning Glory program.

"The top-end players are going to be looked after with five-year deals.

"And fringe players who've been around footy clubs for a long time, who might have been squeezed out under the salary cap, have now got an opportunity to seek other clubs.

"Certainly it's a players' market. It's giving everyone a great opportunity to earn some good money."

Montagna said he expected teammate Brendon Goddard, who comes out of contract at the end of the season, to sign again with the Saints.

"I'm sure Brendon will stay at the football club. I'm very confident of that," he said.
