We won the clearances in the second half without a recognised ruckman against the two "super -ruckmen" in the league and with 25 fewer hitouts and with Blake rucking.
We won the clearances vs Freo with 30 less hitouts.
It's all about the clearance players and rucks are way, way over-rated.

90% of hit outs are embarrassing considering this is the big mens expert field. They jostle and jostle and one will get into clear position,then do some dainty little tap at his feet straight to the opposition. When they hit a target one of ten times they are considered a genius,when it actual fact,it's just a fluke.
A ruckman who can can find a target repeatedly,or smash the ball forward 30 meters is worth it's weight in gold,but they don't do it often. If not then they need to be able to pick up 20 touches around the ground,and snag a couple of goals, then they become important,just as any other key forward,but in terms of hit outs,it's a bit comical

I think that its not the rucking contests that we need them for, but the marking in the middle of the ground...
As mentioned above, everytime we kicked it out of defence, it would be plucked out of the air by a giant...
the only way we managed to move the ball forward was running, or controll of the stoppage..

With the big Nat marking and competing strongly in the centre and Cox with 5 - I am assuming this thread is tongue in cheek! Surely our centres have to work triply hard to get possies in the middle (which they did after half time) - but it would be nicer if we did not have to make contest after contest to get clearances. Be nice to have Kossie up forward and Blakey up back as well. Our backs were so much under the pump from their talls, we never looked like being able to stop them kicking a winning score ... at least we made it a little interesting though. Full credit to our mids again - just like under GT. We are clearly too small all over the ground. 
This is a team game and there is no room for individuals who think they are above walking through the fire.

Pretty sure most of those 7 goals were kicked when the ruckman eas a forward. Hit outs are overated unless to complete advantage. Around the ground is so much more important as proven by what you said. Surely as a knocker of Ben you would have stuck up for hitouts rather than goals kicked but thanks for backing up what many of us think. Good to see you have changed your mind.

Of those 7 goals the West Coast rucks kicked about 4 were from bewildering free kicks at boundary throw-ins 20 metres out from goal.

the thing i found funny (infuriating) was that mick malthouse did his minute with mick analysis on the eagles and wrote on the wing in huge writing " NO MANS LAND" -cox territory
meaning that COX just owns a massive slab on the ground
and how it true it was. he owned that wing. ever time we kicked it there he marked it.
the guy is an abolute fecking gun player.

On the upside, for the 15-20 mins he was fit, I thought Rhys looked tremendous against NicNat, and matched him for leap and taps at the centre bounces (when they bounced straight and fair)... He is developing his ruckwork brilliantly and will be a great, contrasting 1-2 act with Benny Mc for years to come...
His leap and timing were spot on... A few more kg's of muscle (not too many, just enough to harden the body), and he'll be right up there for around the ground strength contests too...

Rucking styles can change before a player develops. Every couple of years the style changes. Jolly is wasting a spot in the team where a couple of years ago he was one of the pies first picked. Athletic jumpers and goal kicking forwards that can ruck are gold. Big Mac is more your plodding type rather than athletic but still important for his ability to take a defensive mark or be the go to player from the kick in.
Rhys might just develop into the modern prototype ruck, he's worth his spot as a forward, ruck or even as an extra running player from the midfield. The best traded in ruck so far this season has been Maric for the Tiges, he was very ordinary for the Crows and is a revelation at the Tigers.
