What potential young talent can we draft now?

Post: # 1276867Post footynut »

With pick 13 gone, will we be able to draft anyone with the potential to be an A grader?
I was really hope to pick up Jake Stringer a quality forward/midfielder who you could really build a team around.
Who are we realistic of picking up now?

Ben Kennedy might drift out to mid 20s Colquhoun, Hrovat, Broomhead, Temay, mason Shaw, Mc Bean, Stark. Still plenty in the 20s.

In the last ten years there's been some solid players taken at 25/26 - Jack Darling, Jack Redden, Jared Rivers, Mark Coughlan, Garrick Ibbotson - as well as plenty of A-graders who go later than that.

Despite wanting to secure Hickey, I'm a little disappointed that we gave up our first round pick for a player that hasn't proven himself yet

About a dozen handy mids will be available, apart from the ones mentioned above, including Simpson, Pongracic, Haynes, Wilkins, Sumner, Shannon Taylor, Graham and Wright. But what we are after, large defenders, Tanner Smith may still be available, along with Harley Walshe, Nick Rodda, Alex Howson, Matt Wallis, and quite a few key position forwards as well. All is not lost! Although I hope we trade for a high draft pick with GWS>

I'd break this years draft down like this.

Top 10 are all potential guns

Pick 11-30 not much difference between them all potential 100+ gamers

Pick 31-50 all potential 50+ gamers

51+ project players, mature players and long shots.

Just my opinion but I pay a fair bit of attention to the draft prospects.

Personally don't think we have lost too much in terms of the draft.

What potential young flops can we draft now would be a more accurate question.
Young kids who are ready to walk into an AFL senior side are extremely rare and always go in the first 3 picks.
The remainder need a sugnificant amount of development.

It is easy to know where a player is at, but near impossible to know where they will be after a few years in the system.
Trading picks for already developed players ensures you know what you are getting for your picks.

The more you know, the more you know you don't know.
When I was a young child, I knew that I knew so much about so much.
Now that I am old and know so much more, I know that I know so much about so little, and so little about so much.

And which player has proved himself that's in the draft. They are just kids with "potential"

In terms of using pick 13 to essentially grab a ruckman with 2 years in the system and a huge amount of potential, I couldn't be happier with that. Sure we could draft a potential gun at 13 but dont we have that now? Hickey has been impressive and on all accounts will be an absolute star.

Lee is less likley but again a mature kid with experiance and ready to play. Ill take that versus an untested junior we would still need to develop.

Id say if we hang onto 25 and 26 instead of dealing both or either of them to secure a key back, my focus would be on skillful midfielders with a bit of pace to fill the gap when Joey, Dal and Lenny hang em up. We have some players in Ross, Dunnell, Curran, Newnes and maybe Winmar but at 25 and 26 we could very well get a star. A young key back to develop wouldnt hurt either

We need players who can kick, find a target etc. I would love to get back in the draft (trade with GWS) earlier so we can look at: Kristian Jaksch - Height: 194cm Weight: 85kg Tom Clurey (KPD) - Height: 193cm Weight: 85kg

Tony Lockett kicks 10 goals

Tanner Smith would be handy. Would like us to use a pick on him if he's around. 194cm key back.

Otherwise mostly just go for mids making skills the priority. Already got our talls by trading.

I've done 40 different draft profiles for this years draft which you can find here:

http://www.contestedfooty.com/2012-afl-draft-prospects/

Some I like who could end up sliding to us.

Jason Pongracic
Mid/Fwd
Strong bodied inside player who could play next year and can rest forward

Mason Shaw (unlikely to be available)
Fwd/Ruck
Smart key forward who pinch hits in the ruck

Tim Broomhead
Mid/Utility
Athletic utility who can win his own football with solid skills

Later picks I like

Cameron Banfield
Defender/Utility
Dual sided smart defender with good pace

James Stewart
Forward/Defender
Long term prospect, mobile big man with good skills

Darcy Fort
Ruck
Long term prospect, hard working late bloomer with plenty of potential.
