any Saints historians?

Post: # 1295204Post HardSaint »

I know I'm gonna be told to send an email to Russell Holmesby, but i stumbled across this pic no date (I suspect 20s sometime cos of the jumpers and it looks like Barney Carr - in the middle) but I'm intrigued as to to who the Indigenous fellow is, what he did, if there's anything more known about him...

St Kilda Football Club team photograph/postcard from the Don Photo Series, post WWI period with blank reverse, mould damage around edges though the image intact, rare and most interesting

Looks to be mid twenties.

Colin Watson is sitting in the middle row and Fred "Flops" Phillips is third from the left in the back row.

"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

This isnt meant to be racist but I would very much doubt it back in those days.

Yeah, I agree, probably not too many indigenous doctors getting around in 1923, especially considering they weren't counted as 'people' until 1967…

I'd love to know more about that guy in the photo though…

Really? An indigenous mascot... Did he run out with the team or something? Did the mascot dress up as 'a saint' like the 80's?

I think that Bill Cubbins is in the back row on the extreme left.

"mascot" in team pics became quite the norm from the late 30's till the mid 50's

this is a past players team from the late 30's , the little blonde boy and his brother who were the son's of the Club Secretary will pop up quite a bit in team pics of the next couple of years

Image

The Back to Back Reserve Permiers of 1941 and 42 the boy is named as "The Mascot" his name is Brian Hodgson

Image

this looks like another "past players" team

Image

now this one is a reserves team maybe early 50's I'm not too sure but i do love how some random boy scout gets in the pic :)
