Thought GT was going to step up to the plate. Well, not really. But I was expecting someone a little more high profile to at least be in the running for the vancancy.Dear St Kilda members,
I would like to start this email by telling you how proud I am to have been elected the next president of the St Kilda Football Club. It is indeed a great honour.
While my duties will not commence until after the club's Best and Fairest award evening next month, I am very much looking forward to continue to work towards the outcome we all want in another prosperous and successful period for our club.
Our board is continually evolving, with four new directors being introduced in the past two years, while the depth of our football department and administration provides a strong and stable direction for the club.
Greg will step aside after serving the maximum term allowed under the club's constitution.
I know Greg would have loved to have seen St Kilda win its second flag under his leadership but I am sure that the foundations laid during his term as president will play a large part in that goal ultimately being achieved.
I have been on the club's board for the past five years and have been head of the club's audit committee for the past four under Greg's presidency.
During this time we have seen the Saints play off in three Grand Finals, build an elite training facility at Linen House Centre, Seaford and become the first AFL club to host a match for premiership points outside Australia with our game earlier this year against the Sydney Swans in Wellington, New Zealand.
Some of my fondest memories of my time as a Saints fan have been watching quality young players arrive and develop. I can still remember seeing Robert Harvey, Nick Riewoldt and Tony Lockett make their way into league footy as teenagers.
None of those three St Kilda legends began their careers at particularly successful times for the club, but we as supporters took great joy at seeing the exciting talent develop before our very eyes which made it all the more special when we made Grand Final appearances in 1997, 2009 and 2010.
St Kilda is very much a part of me and I have been a loyal member of the club for more than 40 years. I look forward to playing my part as we continue to work towards the outcome we are all looking towards in another prosperous and successful period for our club.
