Passing of the torch
Congratulations to Jack Stevens on winning the Trevor Barker medal on Friday night.
For me, this is the official passing of the torch to the next generation of players and officially ends the era of the generation of Reiwoldt, Hayes, Dal Santo etc.
All things must pass, but the future can always be exciting.

Re: Passing of the torch
My kid got Jacks number three after he played well against Geelong a few years ago. I'm just relieved he came on so we did't have to get another jumper. It won't be long before people stop asking who number three is.
Re: Passing of the torch
Riewoldt 31 and Montagna 30 came second and third
Dal 29, Jones 30 meant that 4 of the top 7 were senior players.... And Lenny, Sam and Schnieds were injury riddled
We are still carried by the senior group imo

No and I would doubt he ever will be but he is growing up fast.
Re: Passing of the torch
Nope, but that's ok. He can just stick to being our best player again!sax wrote:Will Jack be skipper next year?

Re: Passing of the torch
True. But since we only won five games, it'd be more accurate to say that we weren't really "carried" by anyone this year.BigMart wrote:We are still carried by the senior group imo
It's not all doom and gloom. The reason we're s*** at the moment is because there's only about eight players bridging the gap between the experienced group and the kids:
Ray
Gwilt
Gilbert
Armitage
Geary
McEvoy
Steven
Roberton
One of them was injured most of the year, six of the others finished in the top 11 of the B&F. This is because they've got 50+ games under their belt and they're 22+. It just takes a bit of time to get comfortable at AFL level.
So yeah, it's going to take the kids time to get there. Two more full years before it really starts happening. And I'm not saying they're all guaranteed of making it. My only point is that it's not surprising that Jack Newnes didn't win the B&F, considering he was just 20 and had played only 7 games at the start of the season. Same for all the other kids.
We're in development for a few years. Understand it and appreciate it for what it is.

No doubt. We have a long road back.
Funnily enough though, the Dogs only came good once Cooney, Griffin, Boyd, Murphy, Giansiracusa, Minson and that fullback had career best or near best form.

Re: Passing of the torch
I reckon Gears should be skipper next year.
Time for generational change and he seems like a good solid citizen.
Roo has had his time.
All our off field idiocy was by older guys. Milne gram cj.
It's important to show the footy world and sponsors we have moved on and not still living in 2010.
I'm hoping roo himself realises this and doesn't contest the captaincy.
He should stand aside . It is the honourable thing to do and we all need to start looking forward not back.
To all those who will say he's the best man for the job. He may well be but there are bigger forces at plate. It's not slow about nick.
The club needs to show a fresh face to the world.

Re: Passing of the torch
Not speaking of the captaincy-- and I'd be happy for Nick to continue whilst he is at the club- unless there is a very clear cut player to take over.
But nick himself in accepting his second in the Trevor barker award said he hoped that next year there needs to be all young players on the stage.

What is 'clear-cut'? Like a champion player?saintbrat wrote:Not speaking of the captaincy-- and I'd be happy for Nick to continue whilst he is at the club- unless there is a very clear cut player to take over.

You don't have to be the best player or a champion to be a good captain - its not under 10s.

Re: Passing of the torch
He is a good player in a bottom side. Needs a lot of help in the midfield and I mean a LOT. But can we get his name right FFS. It's bad enough when the commentators get it wrong et alone his own fans

Didn't hurt getting Kobe Stevens who was regularly getting 30 touches and Tom Libratore becoming the leagues best clearance player and more games into guys like dahlhouse and Wallis. Two good highly rated junior mids in Mc Crae and Hrovat. Jarrad Grant has come on too.

agree you don't have to be the Best player- or a champion But someone who leads- assists, shares, whatever the criteria is that the club/ players/ board see as the qualities that are needed. I'm sure there are a multitude of criteria.
and would include ability to relate to a variety of people, but still be a learner, etc
by clear cut I mean someone who is displaying an increasing number of the qualities / criteria being looked for- not just someone chosen because they feel age is a criteria.

fair call. probably a minor issue really. what we need is 22 leaders!

Re: Passing of the torch
Yes, but even with those guys playing, they were getting spanked until Cooney and Boyd came back and the senior guys started pulling numbers like they were in 2009.gringo wrote:Johnny Member wrote:BigMart wrote:Riewoldt 31 and Montagna 30 came second and third

Once Gilbert and Schneider came back in, we looked better too. Dare I day when Fisher and Gwilt also come back we might even look a bit better again.
It will also allow the young guys a chance to learn their trade, as opposed to holding up the fort themselves.
